I changed an earlier post of mine (the first one in here) to the index.

http://www.reallifeforums.com/viewtopic ... 296#273296

It links directly to the post with the helpful thing, and stuff, and infin will probably put a link to it or somethin at the top of the first post, I don't know, but since you wouldn't have seen it without this post, I made this post. Yeah.

Is there any way to address incomplete, inaccurate, inefficient, or otherwise poor answers in this thread?

Hey, how do I get one of those nifty random avatars like Spany and Ender have?

Well? :)

That's nice, Vek, but what do I do with it?

Put it in the directory with your avatars in it.

Rename it to end in .php

Set it to your avatar.

Missed this one from a while back but I feel it's worth responding to.

If you mean I'm wrong in that he can't convert them then you misinterpreted my comment. I didn't say you can't, I said you don't. You're going to loose a LOT of quality recomressing video from one lossy compression to another and to clean it up you need to do lots of filtering to do it. So yes, it CAN be done, but realistically it shouldn't unless you have a damned good reason to do it.

-also-

I'm working on taking all of the questions and answers here and putting them all together on one webpage. It'll be easier to browse through them without having to deal with all the posts, and in the event that two users have two answers to the same question they can both be displayed on one page. (And in case you were wondering all of the posters who answer questions are credited at the bottom of the page for their help.)

Right now I'm up to question 13 of 24. Once I've got all the pages put together I'll upload the first version to some free hosting for everyone to take a look at.

OK i don't want to sound like a Idiot asking this but i am trying to change my WINXP login background. So far i have Downloaded X-Setup and checked that out. Nothing. I went to Registry Editor>HKEY_USERS>Control Panel>Desktop. Then i changed the Wallpaper File to the picture i want. so i Restarted and all it does is change the picture that comes up a split second before the WinXP Login screen comes up. Im sure you guys answered this already but i couldn't find out where you answered it. Yes I did look.

Are you talking about the Welcome screen or the traditional NT login screen?

The key for changing the Login wallpaper is HKEY_USERS\.Default\ControlPanel\Desktop\Wallpaper. (Which actually changes the wallpaper for all newly created users too, if I'm not mistaken.)

If you want to change the Welcome screen, I found this: Logon Loader. I've never used it (and have no intention, I use the traditional Windows NT login), so use at your own risk.

What would be nice is if you made it a Wiki so that we could add tips without too much maintenance from yourself.

I'll be sure to start learning about it. It's going to start off with just the posts cut and pasted into their own individual pages but I see no reason why not to move it forawrd from there. (for maintinance and updates.) But it may be some time before I implement it since at the moment I'm relearning HTML.

6 links to go before I'm ready to upload the pages to the hosting.

-EDIT-

And I've now actually got enough of this stuff archived to actually put some of it up. Yes, I know it sucks, just be patient while I work though standardizing everything and work some stuff up in photoshop so it doesn't look like complete crap.

OMGWTF Adobe Acrobat Reader takes forever to load

There's a reason for this. Much like Photoshop and Paintshop Pro, Acrobat Reader likes to load every oen of its plug ins before it starts up. You don't need all its plugins, especially if you only want to read .pdf files. Thusly, a solution (shamelessly ripped from the Firefox FAQ)-

Go to the acrobat install folder (Usually C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader (or 6.0 depending.)

Now, change the name of the folder plug_ins to plug_ins_disabled

Make a new folder and call it plug_ins

Move the following three files from plug_ins_disabled to plug_ins -

EWH32.api
printme.api
Search.api

Enjoy your much faster loading pdf reader.

OMG, this mp3 has a really useless intro or outro! How do I edit it with freeware?

/me waits patiently

(also, is there a faster way to write proper id3 tags for my mp3s than to open them individually? ... its kinda stupid that they list the tag content in Windows Exploder, but you can't just edit them with a click on the empty/erronouns field...)
