I have been known to make less ;) True though.

Eh? I wouldn't think the text would be horizontally stretched. For example, here's what the Madman Entertainment forums looks like on my monitor (*WARNING!!* Weeabo Firefox skin! Avert your eyes!):

Looks fine to me.

Try it when you've got more than a single line to read. When your eyes move back to the left, they can lose tracking and you'll wind up reading the wrong line.

Here's something interesting. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22021&p=874109#p874109 shows "cron" at the bottom left for no discernible reason...

Now, how would I go about doing that for Opera? On a Mac?

I AM INVINCIBLE!

I spent close to six hours troubleshooting before figuring out what was going wrong with the avatars, but not why. An extra 0x0a character was being prepended to the file (visible in a packet capture and in the actual downloaded file when compared in a hex editor with the uncorrupted version of the file); this extra byte breaks the format. It also results in the last byte of the file being cut off because the browser is told that the image will be so many bytes long, and it starts counting from that extraneous 0x0a. Some others who have had trouble with this have solved it by re-uploading certain files because they have to be saved in a particular format for proper UTF-8 use, and some programs (notably Notepad in Windows) saves UTF-8 files with a few characters tacked onto the beginning, which causes Unix to get confused. Others have addressed software problems or permissions.

Our case was not like that. It was a single byte -- a newline, or in hex-speak, 0x0a -- added to the end of config.php. How it got there, I'm not really sure, but once it was deleted, everything began working. I have to credit phpBB user CarolC1 for finding a similar problem on her board (a space in her case) for inspiring me to look for this here. I also credit bagheadinc for spending several hours helping me comb through about a dozen possibilities before pointing me in the general direction of what would be the path that led me to the post that led to the solution.

I can't replicate it, either. If it shows up again, can you try it in another browser?

That sounds like it was a bitch of a problem to troubleshoot. I hate that kind of odd-ball nonsensical stuff...

The really weird thing is that if I manually add the newline back, the last two bytes in the file are 0x0a0a. The last two bytes of the file before the fix were 0x000a. How does a null byte get added before a single newline, when the normal editing process adds a double-newline to the end?

I noticed it just now, much better than having to click that silly little button in order to see it. Nice one Martin!
