Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Pure fantasy genius.
Dogma: Funny and mildly philsophical. One of Kevin Smith's best
Once upon a time in Mexico: Strange film. But it has really really cool fight scenes!!!
If trees were monkeys and monkeys were made from plastic then I would be making about as much sense as I usually do.

Akira: An anime classic
Legend of the Drunken Master: One of Jackie Chan's best
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Just go see it. It's great if you know what to expect.
Memento: A great mystery/drama about a guy with short-term memory loss searching for his wife's murderer. Plenty of twists.

I hated Dogma, but meh, to each his own. See it and form your own opinion.

The Shawshank Redemption.

I'm not even going to say what kind of movie it is, or what it's about. It doesn't matter, because you're going to go rent it, anyway. :)

Pulp-Fiction

Awesome movie revolving around the workings of gangsters and an all-star cast which includes Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and Uma Thurman. Directed my Quinton Tarantino. You just gotta see this movie :)

The Princess Bride -- Adventure/Comedy. The beautiful Buttercup looses her true love to pirates and becomes the bride-to-be of the not-so-nice prince. Classic adventure story with swashbuckling and giants and true love etc. etc. This is a must-see for people who like to be up on cultural references – this movie gets quoted a lot.

Duck Soup – Comedy. One of the best Marx Brothers’ movies; Groucho (as Firefly) becomes the head of the country Freedonia because a wealthy widow likes him. Then he goes to war with the neighboring country pretty much just for the heck of it. Incredibly funny, and is the movie with the famous mirror sequence.

A Night at the Opera – Comedy. Also another one of the Marx Brothers’ best. Groucho plays a manager working in the Opera business; he along with Harpo and Chico give the career of a young opera talent a boost while trying not to land in jail. If you can put up with (or even enjoy) a little bit of opera singing on the side, this movie has some of the funniest Marx Brothers bits.

Some Like it Hot -- Comedy. One of Billy Wilder’s best movies, and that’s saying a lot. Two musicians become hunted by the mafia after they witness a shooting; they dress as women to escape with an all-women band to Florida. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are both superb. Extremely silly, and also has one of the most famous closing lines in all of movie-dom.

Seven Samurai -- Epic. Kurosawa’s 3 ½ hour masterpiece about a group of samurai (seven of them, surprise) that gather at a village to save it from bandits. No wire work action sequences, sorry. Also probably a lot more historically accurate than The Last Samurai. :)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest –Drama. Jack Nicholson plays a criminal who is sent to a mental hospital. There he stirs up some excitement with other patients, and becomes the object of hatred for the head nurse (Nurse Ratched, probably one of the most evil-in-a-realistic-way characters around). It’s funny at times, but ultimately extremely serious. (I know Calus mentioned this one first, but didn’t write a description. :P )

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – Western. My favorite (spaghetti) western movie! Three gunmen are after a treasure; the plot takes many twists and turns making it rather epic. If you see any Sergio Leone movie, see this one. It has a badass score, too.

Singin’ in the Rain – Musical/Comedy. If you absolutely hate show tunes you should probably skip this one – I love it, myself, and even if you aren’t a fan of musicals you might find this one interesting anyway because of the very amusing script. At the age when movies went from silent to talkies, a big movie star falls in love with a young Hollywood hopeful. Unfortunately his ultra-famous leading lady wants to destroy her career, while her own is in danger because her voice is really, really horrid.

I'm sure I'll add more later. :D

El Mariachi & Desperado...
Guns, Explosions, Girls... fantastic action...
El Mariachi is only subbed but I'm sure I'd be called a heathen if I said I wanted a dubbed version.
I'd like to say some thing about the third part "Once upon a time in Mexico", but since I've not seen it yet, I'll let someone else do it.

Donnie Darko - A coming-of-age story with sci-fi elements is a poor way to describe this visionary film. Bonus points to the screenplay, which knows how real teenagers think, talk, and act. Doubleplus bonus points for gorgeous cinematography and surprisingly sure-handed lensing from a first-time director. Weird, wonderful, haunting.

Ginger Snaps - horror, werewolf. Another coming-of-age movie, only this time the onset of puberty for young Ginger is complicated by a bite from a werewolf. Sharp humor, buckets of gore, and surprisingly effective special effects make this movie one of a kind.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - musical, rock and roll. The story of Hedwig, who used to be Hansel, and his/her rise to oblivion and beyond. Great, great songs and a fearless central performance by John Cameron Mitchell.

Secretary - erotic/dark comedy. Maggie Gylenhaal stars as a self-destructive, depressed young woman who gets her first job as a secretary for a neurotic boss (James Spader) who has troubles of his own. Before long he's got her bent over the office desk for spankings. Essentially a sweet love story :D

You sir, Rule. That is an awesome movie, Henry Fonda, and Charles Bronson.

On the western vein,

A Fistful of Dollars, and then its inspiration, Yojimbo.

A Few Dollars More. The sequel of course. I can't remember its Japanese counterpart.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Eli Wallach plays an awesome role in that movie as Tuco, the Mexican outlaw.

Kill Bill Vol. 1. Ultra Violent and good direction.

Natural Born Killers. A psychedelic experience full of carnage candy for the eyes and mind.

The Princess Bride. Cary Elwes at his finest. IMO anyways.

Requiem of a Dream. More crazy stuff for your eyes.

Ran, by Akira Kurosawa, an epic tale of Samurai Feudalism.

The Bride with White Hair, an awesome kung-fu movie with a great story.

Fist of Legend, Jet Li whoopin ass and taking names. The plot aint half bad either.

I could go on for hours about movies, I'm a movie buff myself. I've probably forgotten more though.

Dark City - Visionary science fiction; excellent cast, very dark atmosphere. Keep in mind it came out in 1998 (this is important)

A Fistful of Dollars - Western, another by Sergio Leone (in case you haven't noticed, Leone is the master of the western). I would have recommended Good, Bad, and Ugly, but it was already posted =). Fistful of Dollars is a masterful remake of Kirosawa's Yojimbo (samurai movies are westerns in disguise). A gunman enters a town torn apart by two rival factions; rather than commit to one side, The Man With No Name (Eastwood) pits the two against each other by playing both sides of the fence.

John Carpenter's The Thing - very underrated horror/science fiction. Rare case where the remake is better than the original. Researchers in Antartica discover an ancient alien spacecraft, but it seems as though all of its passangers are not dead...excellent psychological movie

Both A Fistful of Dollars and The Thing have scores composed by Ennio Morricone, who also did the music for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, plus a score of other movies. He is, IMO, the best composer of scores in movies.
