08/15/2007 - A Simple game

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

So, who's up for a game of Mornington Crescent?? (come on Greg, it'd be right up your street).

Did you just include the comic itself in the thread? Interesting...

Cricket is an extraordinarily simple game. You have two teams, one out and one in. Each man that's in the team that's in goes out, and the men on the team who are out try to get him out. When the first man in is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. When the men on the team that is in are all out, the team that was out comes in and the team that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. There are also men called umpires who are always out and they decide when the men who are in are out.

Sometimes men will be in when their team goes out. They are not out, but they are out.

When both teams have gone out twice and been in and all the men are out twice, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

And this is why, despite having lived in England for nearly all of my 37 years (barring holidays and the odd month for work) I still don't, and doubt I ever will, understand cricket.

All I caught was a bunch of ins and outs... maybe it's a freudian thing...

I had to register after seeing today's strip.

Who spilled the secret about Mornington Crescent to you Greg? That's classified information!

What gets me about cricket that it's an all-day affair. You have one day test, which would be your "quickie" game, and then a full three-day test. It seems to me the people who invented cricket were the same people who invented the modern income tax code.

Cricket is huge in India and Pakistan. I think it's the only thing that prevents the two countries from just obliterating each other with nukes these days.

Mornington Crescent? Best comic EVER.

Regents Park.... hm, that's a tricky one. I think I can pull off a double reverse horizontal switch...

Regents Park was an illegal move. We are stuck in a Dollis Hill Loop, Regents Park is not a legal break of the loop, so I'm afraid both Regents Park and Camden are both discounted. I'll take that turn:

Dollis Hill. Read up on The Dollis Hill Loop, please.

I was stationed over-seas for several years during my military service and had access to few English speaking television/radio channels. The few that I did have access to seemed to show a lot of cricket and I became obsessed. Honestly the seeds for the obsession were planted by Peter Davison (5th Doctor), but having my friends at the BBC keep me updated on various matches around the world locked it in.
It is amazingly simple once your brain melts from trying to over-think it.

The Dollis Hill Loop is ruining the modern game. But if you insist on playing it through...
