Well we have the best BBQ place here in Lockhart and it's actually quite large inside. (Read: HUGE) I just don't want to plan for a patio arrangement in case the weather is bad or hot.

It is, afterall, the BBQ Capital of the Texas. 8)

Shady Grove is a really nice place and an Austin icon, but when we tried to do a large group get together one weekday evening they weren't very receptive and required at least 80% of the party to be there and on time before ANYONE was seated. On a Saturday afternoon, you'll more than likely be out of luck. Getting 2 people seated is difficult enough on a Saturday afternoon there.

I'm coming off duty that morning so we might wander on down. Lockhart is a nice place to visit and it's an easy drive from North Austin.

Oh and ditto on the reminder blog, or even a blurb in the actual friday comic for us scatterbrained folks

Liz made a good point - we should DEFINATELY have this little shindig at Kreuz' market, just up the road. We'll update the page to reflect that, but not only is the place huge, it has the best brisket you will EVER consume. EVER. Srsly.

I dunno....It'll have a hard time beating my Grampa's brisket. Or his pulled pork....But then again, Native Texans do tend to be rather partial to the family recipes. But anyway. Good brisket makes the drive up from Houston even MORE worth it.

We took a Texan there a few weeks ago who doubted that it was the best brisket too, but she changed her mind after one bite. :D

Best store-bought brisket is definitely a possibility, and would be well worth the drive.

That being said, there are two types of native Texans. Though with big redneck roots in their family and those without. Those with big redneck roots will have very fond memories of brisket and BBQ in general that simply cannot be topped in a store. Memories of the weekend impromptu family get together with all the Aunts, Uncles, cousins and grandparents getting together from all across the counties that you live in. Getting to the family member's house and whatever Uncle is in charge already in the yard, at the pit swilling back beers while paying more attention to his meat than he ever does to his own children. ;) Then some time afternoon the family splits in to the three distinct groups of kids out playing, women inside gossiping and men outside, standing in a circle around/in front of the pit, drinking beer and talking about work and holes in the ground and chicken manure.

I kid you not. I once heard my family have a 45 minute conversation about chicken manure. I tried to go inside to avoid it, but the women were talking about gardening or something else that I was equally uninterested in.

Finally, sometime after 4 o'clock, after 6-8 hours standing around the pit, the man in charge starts cutting little pieces of meet off of the brisket to try out, and passes around more cuttings for everyone else to try. You get that first piece within seconds of it being cut off a hot slab of meat while its still on the grill and its just heaven. After a little more time in the pit, the meat comes out, the women have gotten everything else cooked and ready to go, and its feasting time.

After everyone eats and digests for a while, everyone starts to slowly go home. You say good bye to some people that you won't see again for months, if not longer.

So yeah, there is nothing "wrong" with BBQ from the store. Rudy's still makes the best damn turkey I've ever, ever eaten. But a store can't recreate those redneck moments, and some of that family flavor makes it into the meat, i think. That down home country meat does taste better, but its often the memory of those times that make us absolutely prejudiced against any store claiming they have the best BBQ.

And for those of you without the deep redneck roots that want to say that your family did the same thing. They didn't. They might have gone through the same motions, but without a healthy dose of country ignorance and even a dash of "good ole boy" mixed in, it just isn't the same. If your memories of this happening doesn't involve a significant number of guns, or if beer in bottles were significantly involved, than it just wasn't the same.

Since III Corps had a training holiday today, I took the liberty of reconing Lockhart so now I know where both are; after getting lost a few times... And the brisket at Kreuz' Market is bloody awesome.

God bless!

Edit: Make sure you bring cash to Kreuz' Market, they don't take card. But they do have an ATM in the front of the store.

So I think I might be winning the "Longest Drive to Meet-up" award for this one :-D I'm gonna be coming all the way from the west side of Ft Worth. I've been a loyal reader (if not so much loyal forum-reader) for many a year. When I saw you guys moving to TX, I prayed it was DFW area. Alas, it was not so. Anyway, I'll be there to meet you guys on the 29th!
