I'm done...

Postby karrde on Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:31 pm

I'm finally done, all 11 years of comics read over the past month or so.

See it started when my friend linked me this comic

Image

Why did he send me this particular comic? See because unlike "our hero" I actually had been working on a Dr Who scarf:

He thought I'd be amused and I was.

But see, then there was something niggling in the back of my head. I only started knitting in February for the sole purpose of making the Dr Who scarf. There was the possibility that I might make another down the line for my Father since he got me into Dr Who in the first place, but no plans to ever do anything else. I guess that comic got to me with the references to Harry Potter scarves and it hit me. I should make a House scarf for the Midnight Premiere of the last movie, this is the result:

It gets worse, but I'll leave that for a later post.

Holy crapola that's a big Doctor Who scarf. What season is it? I'm 50% done with a S12 scarf, but it's only 50 stitches wide, or about 8" or so wide. That right there is a BEASTY. (I do know that one of the scarves is monstrously wide. I don't hate myself enough to attempt it. :D )

This is also a S12 scarf.

My pattern said 66 stitches on a #5, so that's what it is.

That pic was about 50% complete, with about 2 1/2 weeks off while I worked on the Ravenclaw scarf I'm now up to 60%.

So is there a real Red Mage scarf?

Wait, you made that scarf in 2 1/2 weeks?!?!? I feel like it should take a lot longer to do that.

To clarify, I made the Harry Potter scarf in 2.5w. The Dr Who scarf I've been working on fin the end of February. Though I am somewhere around 75% now.

I have to say, I'm fairly impressed by the HP scarf in 2 1/2 weeks, too! You must have knit like a madman! Is that done in the round, or knit flat?

Also, I guess the reason I was confused on the Doctor Who scarf was that the pattern I used said to cast on 50 stitches. Didn't specify a needle size, so I used a 5, but in ADDITION to that, I also tend to knit very, very tightly. Started mine on May 29, and it looks like I'm at 58.2% done, according to the scarf-o-matic. :D

The one thing I do notice about the Doctor Who scarves is that there's about a half a dozen different people with opinions on the size, so creating a "true" replica is almost always a losing battle. Way I figger it, as long as the stripes are about the right proportion, make what makes ya happy and all's well. :)

(And yes - the White Mage scarf does exist. I haven't taken any completed photos of it yet, but here's the project page on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/GregDea ... mage-scarf )

It's knit in the round. 70 stitches around and 19x24 stitches long. I did knit quite a bit it seems, but I did have a deadline :)

I originally got my info from http://doctorwhoscarf.com which said 66 stitches on a #4-6. I'm also a pretty tight knitter, and I just shot for the middle. I'm actually using the printed pattern from http://www.lespaceplie.com/drwho/scarf.html since it was a pdf to print out.

As of the row I finished before I went to get some FroYo

That is a fact. There's nothing "perfect" about my scarf, the colors aren't quite right. There was a stripe that I just wasn't paying attention and it has a extra rib or two. The occasional stitch is futzed. And you can tell when I switched from straight needles to circular needles. But in the end it's mine and I'm perfectly happy with it.

Neat, slightly different from what I came up with myself, your points are more pointy than mine. Of course I'm saying this in theory I haven't actually started on mine.

Went ahead and created a ravely project to add the designs I play to use:

http://www.ravelry.com/projects/karrde/white-mage-scarf

As I say in the notes I'm unsure how I'm going to do the character. The "monogram" on the Ravenclaw scarf did not come out as well as I liked. I did that by just letting the yarn carry, but since I was in the round I'd have to pull it back and that caused issues. I've seen vids on how to turn around on the circle, I might give that a try.
