Optimal Gaming Environment

Post by Dancing Fire Monkey » Sat Mar 13, 2004 4:41 pm

This might take a little bit of explaining, so bear with me and I’ll try my best.

There is a smaller room in my house that contains a television, a VCR, an X-Box, and, more recently, my computer. It is, for all intents and purposes, a game room.

The trouble started when my dad bought Madden 2004 for the X-box. He… plays it a lot. He’s had it almost three months now, and it still seems like he’s playing it all the time. I recently (2 days ago) started playing System Shock 2. It wasn’t as scary or ambient as I had been led to believe, so, frustrated, I thought: Why not try it late at night with the lights off?

Holy Crap.

I can’t begin to tell you the difference that made. I found myself hiding behind vending machines, gun shaking, scared half to death, the ridicule of The Many permeating my mind.

Unfortunately, it was at that moment that my dad came in, rolled his eyes (I might not have actually seen him do it, but I know he did :P ) and asked what I was doing sitting in the dark. I mentioned "Optimal Gaming Light Level". He chuckled and turned on the light. I screamed and said "Grah! What are you doing! I need that off!" He said he needed it on and turned on the X-Box for another round of Madden. Now it’s horribly bright… pop songs from Madden are wafting through the air, and the terror I felt before is utterly extinguished.

I thought about moving the computer back up to my room, but now that we have DSL everyone wants to use the Internet, and that means people would be invading my teenage dominion.

Looks like I’m out of luck.

Oh well… suggestions/ideas/comments?

It's his X-Box. My Comp.

I might be able to convince him to move the X-Box, though.

Heh. Maybe I'll stand next to the computer, wrap my arms around the monitor and growl possesivly at anyone who walks by.

I suppose their reasoning is that, although it's my computer, my parents are paying for the DSL, and that means they can use the internet whenever they want.

Well, they're right. And since I contribute nothing else to this family I figure letting them use my computer for the internet is the least I can do.

The problem is mainly my computer being in such a public area in the house. It hadn't bothered me until I tried to play System Shock 2 and kept getting my gaming nirvana (God, I'm suck a geek) interupted. Do any of you guys have this problem or something like it?

Make them buy their own computer for the DSL line.

Set up some partitions of some sort. Make like a little cubicle with a roof.

Playing scary videogames in the dark is AWESOME.

I used to play a mod for Half-life called "They Hunger" which is basically hours and hours of zombies jumping out at you from hidden places in the dark, crying out for your flesh and brains. I play it in total silence and darkness so the only light I have to see the zombies with is the in-game flashlight. By the time I finish I'm usually shaking and my pulse is way up. It rocks.

May I suggest confronting your family about this head-on? Just be like, "Okay, this game is best played in quiet darkness. I want to play it in quiet darkness. You will all respect my right to scare myself and give me some time at night to play this with no distractions." If they don't listen to that, there's pretty much nothing you can do.

Does your door have a lock?
If not, improvise like i did.
put a chair or something against so its totally unmovable.
If someone tries to open it, it will scare you to hell  (and they wont get in unless you say otherwise).

I understand exactly what you mean - while playing both AvP2 and System Shock 2 (late at night, in the dark, with noise-canceling headphones) my sister came in and either took my headphones off or put her hand on my shoulder or something. After I stopped screaming like a little girl, she turned on the lights and proceeded to watch something on the DVD player. Most annoying.

Probably the best thing you can do is explain to your dad that this game is like a really good horror movie, and watching horror movies with the lights on or people doing other things in the room sort of defeats the point. You also might want to try playing after he's gone to bed.

Oh, I don't know how far into SS2 you are, but I can assure you: it gets worse. :)

Well... I've tried very hard in the past to get my dad to play video games. So far the list of games he's enjoyed and went out of his way to play again has three entries: Madden, Civilization II, and AVP2. The list of games he hasn't enjoyed is much, much longer, including KOTOR, Morrowind, Deus Ex, C&C, Halo, Homeworld 2, etc. Based on his previous record, I think the chances of him enjoying SS2 are fairly slim... but it wouldn't hurt to try, I suppose.

I think another problem is the game room itself. It's just off the main entry way, contains three doors (Two of which are almost completly made of glass) and a large bay window just to the right of the comp. Unless it's night out, the room's just not going to get sufficiantly dark.

I think I'll ask to have a set period of time, say, 7:00-9:00, where no one is to disturb me and my darkness.

Sweet baby Jesus...

I'm still branching through the Medical/Crew Quarters/R&D sectors at the moment.

Me: Damn Vending Machine.

Me: Everyone's dead. Just gimmie the stupid chips.
*Wrench Smacking Sound*
Haunting Voice: I'm... sorry...
Me: Wha...
*Pipe Smacking Sound*
Me: *Dead*

This is why I now sit in the corner of the chemical storage room, wrench held high above my head, shaking.

Oh, you're still on the (second, I think) floor? HAHA! Trust me, you ain't seen /nothing/ yet. Engineering isn't that bad, but Hydroponics is, shall we say, fun. And... but that would be telling.

I just made it into engineering. Got to the... hmm... "Out of Body" experience.

That freaked me out... seriously.
