Israeli Airstrike Kills Hamas Founder

Post by chaos42 » Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:37 am

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the founder and leader of the Hamas militant group that targeted Israelis in suicide bombings, was killed by missiles fired from Israeli helicopters as he left a mosque at daybreak Monday, witnesses said.

Sharon has opened the gates of hell and nothing will stop us from cutting off his head," leaders of the radical Islamic group vowed.

"Words cannot describe the emotion of anger and hate inside our hearts," said Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh, a close associate of Yassin in Gaza. He said that "the enemy should expect a response that will turn the ground under his feet to hell ... All of Palestine will turn into a volcano that will burn up the enemies."

"The battle is open and war between us and them is open. They are the killers of prophets and today they killed an Islamic symbol," said senior Hamas political leader Abdul Aziz al Rantissi.

After news of the killing broke crowds took to the streets in Gaza, denouncing Israel and calling for revenge.

"We will send death to every house, every city, every street in Israel," shouted Hamas militants through loudspeakers.

Later there were reports of clashes near Israeli settlements in Gaza. A rocket is thought to have been fired near the Erez crossing with Israel.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei called the attack on Sheikh Yassin a "dangerous, cowardly act".

Tens of thousands of Palestinians, many calling for revenge, poured into the streets of Gaza as news spread of Yassin's death. In Gaza City, hundreds of gunmen were among the protesters, and children burned tires in protest, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

Cars drove through the streets blaring calls for revenge over loudspeakers. Some aired recordings of Yassin, saying, "We chose this road, and will end with martyrdom or victory."

Mosques read passages from the Quran and two Gaza churches rang their church bells.

Yassin was by far the most senior Palestinian militant killed in more than three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.

Announcing Yassin's death, the Hamas leadership said, "Sharon has opened the gates of hell and nothing will stop us from cutting off his head," referring to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon."

It will be interesting to see what comes of this...
I'm actually watching the funeral procession for Yassin on CNN right now. The street is filled with supporters with Palestinian flags....Other reports have mentioned that some hostility has already started....

I hope they realize they're being total hypocrites by reading bible passages and yet claiming they have the keys to the gates of hell.

Israelis and Palestinians have yet again showed us how armed resistance and responding to it with military force is the best solution to combat problems.

No, we just need to kill them all. Much more effective that way.

I wonder what Bjarni has to say about all of this. According to his version of Islam, calling Yassin a "prophet" or an "Islamic symbol" isn't accurate.

Fucking hell, who could have thought that this was a good idea?
Yes, the guy is a bastard, but fucking hell, I thought Sharon was trying to sell compromise and diplomacy, and pulling out of gaza.

I guess he was tired of the bullshit cease-fires Hamas was supposed to respect and then having suicide bombers kill his civilians. I mean, they have only relatilated every single time a bomber has snuck in there.

hmm, this may be cynical of me, but I'm seeing that Israel's strategy is to bring Hamas to a full frontal assault war. If they are fighting them in Israel... it can be claimed as defense. And since Israel is better situated to take on that type of conflict... The only wild card left would be help from other Arab countries. Then maybe the US would get tangled up into it and bring in a bunch of other countries... There's a more realistic World War III scenario, Blaze

No, that'[d hurt puppies, and we can't have that. I'm more in favor of some sort of plague.

Leopard, Israel has defeated Arab coalitions several times in the past. I'm not saying that they've learned their lesson about attacking a country that is the equivalent of a hyperactive rabid doberman on pcp, but I doubt they'd et the US dragged into such a conflict.
