Looking for an Anime where the bad guys win. >_>

Post by EvilElf » Thu Mar 25, 2004 3:00 am

I have been wanting to see an anime that has the bad guys win instead of the good guys.

Any out there?

Nothing that I've seen, which is too bad.

Yeah, where are the anime tragedies?
"He who lives by the sword dies by my arrow."

"In your histories, there are continual justifications for all manner of hellish actions. Claims of nobility and heritage and honor to cover up every bit of genocide, assassination, and massacre. At least the Horde is honest in their naked lust for power."

I know one where everyone dies. That is not exactly the bad guys win.

Saikano is like that. Well, technically not everyone dies but almost. It is tragedy.

Japanese romance: everybody dies
Japanese comedy: a few people die
Japanese tragedy: nobody dies

Berserk would be exactly the one you are looking for. Yeah, that one sure doesn't have a happy ending.

Wolf's Rain would be an incredibly tragic one to watch, if that's what you're looking for... but I'd say that nobody wins in that. I guess you could argue about the main characters not-losing, but that’s worthy of debate. But then it’s also debatable whether the bad guy didn’t not-lose either…

Oh yeah, while there aren’t really any bad guys per se, Hikaru no Go has a remarkable untraditional final episode for the genre. But, uh, that’s not actually been made yet though. (It would be in the last episode of the OVA.) But check it out once it does.

I can think of a lot more where nobody really wins or loses, because the plot isn’t really a win-or-lose type of plot.

Excel Saga. Well, it depends on your definition of "good" and "bad." and "win."

Blue Gender. The bad guys totally won in that. "The Bad Guys" being Yuri, who must be bad simply because I hated him so much. I was really hoping for his violent death, but I suppose they wanted a twist with the ending, you know, where, "Sorry, but this asshole is gonna save the world." The saddest ending I ever saw.
In the end though, it's really the bees that get Sam.

I'll never regret that I stopped watching Blue Gender at episode 1.

yeah trying to find stuff where the bad guys win is pretty hard, East or West. unhappy endings just don't sell well. the only stuff i can think if where the bad guy wins, utterly, is the elric of melnibone saga by michael moorcock, but thats books not anime. although universal is supposedly going to make a movie based on them. *shudders* care to lay odds on THAT getting screwed up beyond all recognition?

Define "Bad Guys" in Evangelion and I'll wonder whether or not they won or not.... Argh... Head hurts....

There's a decent amount of dying at the end of Escaflowne. But not enough. And the bad guys lose, dammit.

This smells like money, as PennyArcade once said.

4 to 1 any movie of Elric is screwed beyond all recognition. :)

Since we're essentially revealing the endings of various anime, I'll shrink my contribution.

The bad guy wins in Giant Robo, but of course it's not the bad guy propped up the entire series, and it's not a complete victory. Still sucks to be the good guys at the end.

Best summary of the end, evar.

Hmmm, Grave of The Fireflies should count. There is no direct bad guy, but the US is the cause of all the hardships. And the Good guys(the main characters) definetly don't win.
