Dressing up for Ren Fest
Dressing up for Ren Fest
Okay. The Georgia Ren Fest starts April 17th. I've got a friend in it again this year, and his girlfriend, Erica, my other friend, wants to go opening weekend. Erica and her brother, and some others, are all going to go as LOTR characters. She asked me to be one too, but I've never done it before. Not that I wouldn't, though. So basically, what do y'all think? Dress up or not to dress up. That is the question. Oh... yeah, if I do who should I be. I'm thinking an Oliphant. Possible?
You don't see people cosplaying at Ren Faires very often... =P
It's considered more acceptible for a Renn. Faire goer to dress up in Renn. garb for a cosplay event (anime cons), but not many people -- in my experience of knowing friends -- are fond of cosplayers coming to Renn. Faires in cosplay garb.
Conventions have a wider range of variety. Most Renn. Faires try to have a specific feeling and setting. It's as simple as that.
Oh, and by "cosplay" I mean the majority of people who dress up as anime characters or video game characters, in case I need to be specific.

Wow... people don't dress up at your local Ren Fests (yes we tend to call is fest not fair, live with it). There's always tons at ours. There's three guys who go as the three musketeers every weekend of the festival every single year, AND THEY DON'T GET PAID. They just do it for fun, but I think they might let them in for free now. Always lots of other medieval/renaissance characters as well (and yes I'm sure they don't work there). This year they're doing a Robin Hood theme for the first time, so there might be some interesting garbs on display.

yeah, half the fun of going to a ren faire is going in character. i do advise against going as fictional (fantasy) characters, but most LotR garb is basicly the same as a lot of ren garb (provided its a generic and not a period specific faire) so dress up, but don't call it LotR. glueing wool to your feet and going barefoot will NOT be appreciated.

I wouldn't say that it was period specific. They tend to have people that look obviously midevil even though its a rennaissance festive. There's also some fantasy characters. People have come as fairies and there used to be a Troll that worked there, and if I recall there were people going as LOTR characters last year.
*hmmm... maybe a dead soldier would work. Being transparent and green might be tough to pull off, though*
At the ren faire I went to, they had an event, Dress up as your favorite fictional charater and get in 10% off, or something like that, I didn't get to dress up that year, but it was really fun to see hobbits walking around!
