On the hunt for good Shouju.

Post by NorthernComfort » Sun Mar 28, 2004 12:35 am

Don't bother checking the profile, I'm a guy. And I want some good shouju anime. With good character, good interactions, good drama. Hopefully nothing with magical girls or even fights. If it's got a mech, no way. Anybody know of something I'm looking for?

Closest thing to that I've seen is Ah! My Goddess. Not much focused on magical girl-ness.
Escaflowne has big mechs and fights, but it's kinda shoujo-ish. It's kinda borderline.

Other than that, Shoujo anime isn't really my thing. Growing up playing violent video games has given me a thirst for blood and violence.

Blood and violence is great, but in anime it gets on my nerves. I've seen Ah! My Goddess, it was pretty good. Short and sweet, but a bit too "magical girl comes and falls in love with loser for no reason" haha...

Escaflowne kicked major ass, because it all kicked ass. It was all good.

But anything else? Slow-moving, romantic, character devlopment galore? Like a great Megatokyo anime?

Ah! My Goddess isn't shoujo.... Its primary audience is boys. Same goes for Ranma, Love Hina, and Tenchi Muyo. Escaflowne is a true crossover.

Check out Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances). Classic bit of high school romance/friendship drama, from Gainax.
Another big title is Hana Yori Dango (Boys over Flowers). Both of these have zero magic or SF, and plenty of falling cherry blossoms and character development. KareKano is the wackier of the two.

Fruits Basket is a pretty popular one right now. It has myth-type magic, but no transforming magic girls (heaven forbid…). Not really romantic per se, but see my blurb in the recommendation thread.

Azumanga Daioh is very good, but is completely lacking in the romance department. It follows the day to day lives of a very quirky cast of characters (all girls) as they go through high school. Is occasionally on crack, in a good way. :)

Kodomo no Omocha is more comedy than anything else… The intended audience is quite a bit younger than the others I mentioned. Soooo hyper.

Then there’s old school ones like Marmalade Boy… I haven’t seen it myself, but if you’re looking for something like MegaTokyo…

Awesome. Thanks. I remember watching the first few episodes of Kare Kano and enjoying it.. but it definitely has that Gainax touch... of insanity!

I'll try out Boys over Flowers and Marmalade Boy too. :)

I was just looking at the title of this thread, and it's funny that it means "On the hunt for good young girl", it's kinda like on that Japanese history show, where this guy with a heavy English accent continually mispronounced "Edo" and instead was saying a word that means porn

/me warns everyone about making comments about him and how much Shojo anime he's seen else they be on the receiving end of a very painful kimura armlock.

Anyways, if it's Shojo anime you're looking for:

Hmmm...no magical girls or mechs? Well, that'll limit things quite a bit.

-Rose of Versailles (available on fansub): set a few years befor the French revolution. Follows the story of a young girl, named Oscar, of a French Army officer who was raised as a boy by her father simply because he wanted a son. Very good period piece and noted for it's portrayal of the decadence of the French bougeise.

(Dunno, if I can recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena. Not quite a magical girl anime, but somewhat crosses into it.)

-Memories Off (OAV). Three Episodes, quite Megatokyo-ish when it comes to the pacing and style, I guess it helps that the series was based off a dating sim. (Only available on fansub, hard to find even on Kazaa, I guess I could give you one episode if you're ever interested.)
Yo Mav, I'm real happy for you and Imma let you finish but Hirschoff had the best sig trends of all time.

Chobits is good. Silly, but funny.
And yes, I'll take either shoujo anime, or one young, live, Japanese girl in a school girl outfit.
Because I'm just perverted that way.
>_> <_<
Call off the cops! I'm kidding!

Who knows, maybe girls in Japan like watching losers get horny over robot girls. Ooh... romantic. ^_^

Was just about to say that. Everyone remember Dom's rant about Chobits not being a shojo on Megatokyo?
