Just for laughs, watch Muppet Treasure Island. I know, I know. It's a kid's movie. But it has pirates, musical numbers, and muppets. Something for everyone! Really, when a movie starts out "Shiver my tembers, shiver my soul", how can you refuse?!

(Heh, this is quasi-serious; I just wanted to post to divert attention from from the illegal lists and History of the World Pt 1. Blazing Saddles? good. HotW Pt1? Not so much.)

Moulin Rouge - Very cute tragedy/romance/comedy. Not the most profound ideas in the world, but very funny and touching. An aspiring English writer comes to Paris to write a show for Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with a Parisian dancer.

Spinal Tap - Comedy. Satire of a documentary about a fictional rock band (they're reminiscent of KISS).

Silence of the Lambs - Very scary psychology movie O_O
"Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, 'You're next.' They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals."

Spinal Tap was fictional? Then who played on that episode of The Simpsons?

Spinal Tap started out as "mockumentary" and wound up unintentionally fooling quite a few people. The cast did however tour the country later on as the rock band Spinal Tap.

Anyway.....

Waiting for Guffman - another mockumentary by the same director of Spinal Tap, Christopher Guest. Eugene Levy is among those starring.
Napoleon Dynamite - still in select theatres, this is a plotless comedy produced on a shoestring budget about a geeky teenager living in a backwater Idaho town.
The Royal Tenenbaums
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein - a B&W comedy made in the mid 1940s starring one of the most popular comedic pairs of the era. Also stars Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr and Glenn Strange; all veterans from the 1930's monster films.
Ghost World - it has Steve Buscemi in it....that's all you need to know!
Godfather 1 and 2
Lost in Translation
Swimming Pool

This thread needs all of the lists exterminated.

American History X- A brtual story of a neo-Nazi who murders two black robbers and serves three years in prison. However, his younger brother is also becoming a Nazi. It's a difficult and very tough tale of racism. Amazing film- Edward Norton plays the older brother Nazi, and it is by far his best performance.

Fight Club- Another good Edward Norton, but Brad Pitt steals the show as the incredible Tyler Durden. Speaks volumes of beautiful anti-consumerism and anti-conformity, and manages to not get preachy due to its amazingly awesome plot. And the twist... oh that twist makes every first-time's viewer head spin. :)

Maybe I'll edit in a few more later.

There was this great quote about Spinal tap but I can't seem to find it. Spinal Tap is Englands greatest medal band, too bad their americans. Its someone like that.

And other set of two.

In the Heat of the Night - Police Drama - It is about a Black Homicide Detective from Philadelphia ends up investigating a murder in the Deep south.

Arsenic and Old Lace - Comedy - About a man whos family is NUTS. He is about to go on his Honeymoon when he learns about his two aunts hobby.

Also whould you people stop making lists without any details.

Bloodsport yes yes, I know it's corny, old, and Van Dame couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag, but if you want to watch a bunch of guys beat the crap out of eachother, in an excellently dramatized sort of way, it's STILL the best.

wow, i cant believe no one has mentioned some of the best movies ever (i kno this sounds corny considering people have their own idea of what constitues a good movie, but bare with me, these are see before you die type movies...no, really) i consider myself a movie buff who seen it all, but then again, i sound like i have my head up my arse...

all of kevin smiths(in the miniverse of comedy he's created. lets just pretend "jersey girl" dosent exist, shall we?)
clerks - randall is an asshole, but u gotta love him and his hamaphrodidic porn
dogma(allready been said, but damn it, im completing the list)
chasing amy
mallrats (especially this) - brody is somewhat a hero of mine
jay and silent bob strike back - its vulgar and its full of spoofs, but its got some quality moments
the clerks animated movie is in the works, and im sure it'll make this list.

note:if uve seen any of kevin smiths movies or heard of em, u will not need a synopsis on the style or content.

donnie darko - very original idea about fate, if anything, good for a laugh
end of evangelion - its sorta a movie, anyway it deserves all the credit it gets
stargate - what a classic scifi, but the series sucks
cowboy beebop movie - very good animation
adaptation - i just love stream of consiousness, brings out the idiosyncracies
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind - made by the same guy who did being john malcovich and adaptation, all his films are thought provoking, arthouse, and some of the richest movies ive seen
resovoir dogs - a good quentin terrantino classic
the blues bros - a great movie, with quality, even if it is old
police story - jackie chan before america
crouching tiger, hidden dragon - very good kung fu movie, every1 knows it.
hero -(like crouching tiger, xcept i like it better)
buffalo soldier - tip top movie, black comedy, sucks you in
the last samurai - ppl gave it shit, but its actually quite good
the man who sued god - billy connoly is halarious whatever hes in (except the last samurai  ).
scarface - a little tedious at times, but one of the most quoted movies

most of standley kubrics - hes a genius....at directing
clockwork orange - ...weird. ask no more, just see for yourself
2001 a space oddessy - same boat as clockwork
full metal jacket - gritty, gory, well done alround
(i cant remember the rest)

and for a change, matt stone and trey parker:

southpark movie - ....ask only if your stupid
orgasmo - morman pornstar, nuff said
basketball - actually contains an intelligent idea
cannibal the musical - one of their earliers, hated by some and loved by many

happy gilmore - its just so great, even if it is interlectually devoid

id like to say my standards are pretty high, ive been known to walk outta the movie theatre if the movie is sucky... i.e. the transporter, anything with reece witherspoon in it (why do girls always drag me to those?)
well, that should be more than enuff to rack up a hefty bill at blockbuster videos :P
plus i cant think of anymore, maybe tomorow.....

Basic - Movie that really makes you think.
Phonebooth - A good v. evil kind of movie.
You can't deny laughter; when it comes, it plops down in your favorite chair and stays as long as it wants.

Event Horizon
Bashed in many reviews but I still like it. Kinda a haunted house movie in space. Contains a few quite bloody scenes, including somebody going into space without a space suit!

Pulp Fiction
Needs no explanation, I think. Samuel L. Jackson is cool as hell with his Ezechiel 25-17 thingy.

From Dusk Till Dawn
Best burning alive scene ever. Salma Hayek's snake dance turned this movie into a must see.

Final Destination
Just too cool for words

American Beauty
Incredibly hilarious. I felt kinda sorry for Lester Burnham. His wife was cheating on him, treats him like dirt and then she has the nerve to blame him for their lousy marriage!

Cube
Guy gets sliced like a tomato by a trap in a maze. Sick, sick, sick!

I’ve got a lot to say here, so if I quote someone it will begin with (name):

I’m not a movie person, by any means. I’ve seen a lot, but there’s still so much I want to see. However, I have a few things I want to say after reading everything here.

First off, this thread is clichéd and overly repetitive. I know Kill Bill was cool. I don't need to be told a hundred times.

AzraeL: the blues bros - a great movie, with quality, even if it is old
If you think a movie could possibly lack quality because of its age, you definitely need to think about how you throw around the term “movie buff.”

AzraeL: note:if uve seen any of kevin smiths movies or heard of em…
Everyone has seen Kevin Smith’s movies.

AzraeL: hero -(like crouching tiger, xcept i like it better)
That’s because Hero is better.

Blaze: Bloodsport
Excellent choice.

SothThe69th: I heard about this cool idea, it's called "Read the entire thread jackass."
At least somebody’s noticed…

Jena13: Equilibrium
The theme was sort of crammed down my throat, but the gun fights were fantastic. Everyone needs to see it anyway.

Terrene: Street Fighter
Excellent! I just watched that the other day!

Slakdisda: Basic
I LOVE Basic!

Now, ahem, my list:
The Heroic Trio – High-flying, super heroine, martial-arts flick. Starring Michelle Yeoh.
The Executioners – The sequel to The Heroic Trio. Almost as awesome.
The God of Cookery – Stephen Chow movie. A world famous chef loses everything and only a street vendor and her rag-tag bunch of hooligans can help get it back.
Shaolin Soccer – A movie I’m sure many of you are familiar with. It’s the movie Stephen Chow is famous for in the states. A young man is searching for a way to enlighten the world on the wonders of Shaolin kung fu, when an old, failed soccer player convinces him and his brothers to form a soccer team.
Get Shorty – John Travolta, Danny Devito, Gene Hackman, and Rene Russo. Travolta’s a loan shark looking to make it big as a Hollywood producer. But I’ve already said too much. Go see it before the sequel comes out!

Edit - Just a note: I know I seem rather rude (OK, very rude) in this post. I don’t mean to be, it’s just that things were said and I got irked. I’m sorry if I've offended anyone.
