This guy thinks pro-anorexia sites are OK! :x
ANOREXIC PRIDE SITES CENSORED!
by Hank Willow, staff reporter [January 5, 2002]

[HollywoodInvestigator.com] Anorexics are sick and tired of being told there's something wrong with their svelte lifestyle choice -- and they're fighting back with Anorexia Pride websites!
But in a massive censorship sweep, medical activists are shutting down the Pride sites as fast as they're going online!

Those are the shocking findings of a Hollywood Investigator investigation into Anorexia Pride -- and net censorship!

ABC News and Salon have warned America about the rise of Anorexia Pride websites. Their warnings are echoed by Lifelines Foundation for Eating Disorders, and other media and medical outlets.

And in case warnings aren't enough -- the Cincinnati Post reports that activists are organizing a censorship campaign to silence Anorexia Pride on the net!

National Review reports: "Earlier this year, the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders asked Internet engines to shut down or 'unlist' pro-ana sites, and some did." [12/17/01, p.12].

Anorexia Pride websites sport such names as: Dying To Be Thin, Anorexic With Pride, Empress's World, Wasting Away On The Web, Starving For Perfection, Food Is Evil, and Thinpiration. There are also newsgroups such as Beautiful By Bones, and email listservs such as Puking Pals.

But when the Hollywood Investigator searched for Anorexic Pride sites via Google, many sites were found -- but without working links!

The Blankgirl site (hosted on MSN) had been shut. Anorexic With Pride (hosted on Geocities) still had its intro page -- but no content!

The only halfway "pro-ana" working website found by the Investigator via Google was Food Is Evil (hosted on Dairyland -- at least for now).

However, while searching under Anorexic With Pride returns few working "pro-ana" sites, it returns many working "anti-ana" sites.

The MetaSpider engine returned several Anorexic Pride sites -- but while the anti-ana links worked -- many pro-ana sites had been shut! Such as Anorexic Nation, which proclaims: "Proudly Pro-Anarexic and In Your Face Fat Ass."

AnorexiAngel (on Geocities) offers a more moderate voice, providing tips on "how to be ana" -- but also "how to recover" from anorexia should that be one's lifestyle choice. But again, AnorexiAngel's pro-ana links are less likely to work.

However, AnorexiAngel's moderation is not found on anti-ana sites!

Extremism on the Net labels pro-ana sites to be "extremism" -- equating them to "white supremacy" and "political fascism" sites!

Shockingly, despite such "monitoring," hate sites of all colors and politics are many and easy to find -- while people who are at worst celebrating their own illness are vigorously and successfully silenced.
I can't believe a professional journalist would write this, let alone a male one!

I saw the title of this thread and thought "MEW GUY!" and then I realized that he was the one who made the thread, and I was highly disappointed.

/takes hammer to the guy

I have issues with people advocating any dangerous or harmful disorder, such as alcoholism. I'm against homosexuality, but that's a lifestyle choice, not a disorder.

And at first I thought the journalist was being sarcastic.

This has to be left over from April Fool's....doesn't it? :?

Well, why should anyone's site be censored?
Unless you are doing something illigal, child porn, soliciting drugs or clearly inciting violence. Censorship is bad. Period.
Be as obnoxious as you want. Yell and scream about how terrible it is the these people celebrate such a horrible mental and physical illness. But they still have the right to think it's okay to be anorexic and celebrate it with others.

Dreamer, it's not just that they celebrate it, it's that they encourage it. These are websites viewed by teens and preteens with advice on how to keep from eating, pictures of skinny girls to inspire them not to eat called "thinsperation" and encouragement to "become" anorexic. It's rather similar to an online cult.

they need help to start feeling good about themselves as they are. or were, i mean ppl shouldn't be fat but not anorecitc either.

i've lost about 20 pounds the last year and weight about 100 lbs now which is way too little..(about 5'8 tall) so i'm fighting to gain weight again.. it's not easyy but i'm trying.
having pride sites for ppl who are ill is not a good thing.. more sites where they can get help instead pls.
Everybody's lost but they're pretending they're not.

so suck my tongue and be happy

Oh, then good idea everyone. Censorship sounds fabulous when you put it this way. Why don't we fast forward this slippery slope as much as possible?
I think it's perfectly safe to start with something we all find generally detestable, encouraging a lifestyle with is abhorrent.
And then why don't we move on to censoring the NAMBLA website? I mean, there must be at least 90% of the population that find both of these topics disgusting.
Maybe then we could move onto other websites encouraging self-destructive behavior. How about suicide? Are there sites supporting suicide? I mean, there's a large majority of people who think this is wrong, right? Okay, maybe anything encouraging physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill who simply want to die with dignity. I mean, that’s still illegal last time I checked. So toss it. And hell, if it was so easy to censor things only detested by 90% of the population, why not move down to 85% and see how much anger we can inspire. How about porn? How about other forms of free speech?
I'll warn you about something. By the time censorship finds something you don't want censored, it'll be too late. The pendulum will be swinging. and it's a big, fat, heavy pendulum that is going to be VERY hard to stop at this point.

Hate this disease all you want, and detest the fact that it's being encouraged and supported on the web. Hell, I hate it too, and I can't stand that the website is there. (joke or not) I've had personal experience with anorexia and know what it can do. But that doesn't mean it should be censored. We need to protect the freedoms of EVERYONE or we lose them ourselves.

But go ahead and throw water on the slope if you wish. When in Rome... I guess I'll go get my sled.

Dreamer, I know, it's a confusing issue. I hate censorship, too, but I find myself torn when the issue comes up. There is no question that these sites are seriously harmful.

So what should we do? Nothing? Allow 10 year olds to become indoctrinated with anorexia as the latest trend next to glitter nail polish? Should we just take measures to make them unavailable to those under 18? Should we lie back and expect parents to shelter their kids? That would leave millions of kids exposed, as it's extremely hard to make sure a kid never gets exposed to this kind of thing, even assuming that all parents are clever, caring and well informed. Maybe the solution is to let kids see it, but educate them about it and be sure that help is available if they fall into the trap?

I'm really interested in what you think should be the response to this phenomenon.

Dreamer, nobody has said that he should be censored or that the article or site be taken down. NOBODY.

What has been said is that we disagree with him. Vehemently. Disagreeing vehemently and calling for censorship are two incredibly different things.

Maybe people should learn a tiny bit of self discipline? They choose to starve themselves because they're idiots. Idiots serve no useful function if they have no buying power, which 10-year-olds do not. Let them die.
