So. Just because evolution/sex whatever is the way that life continues makes it our meaning/purpose?

(food for thought)

Not really, I don't claim to know the meaning of life, but there are misconceptions about evolution that need to be dispelled

mrchapel, it's a function of society not of intelligence itself that causes intelligence to be less likely to be passed on. Once these societal influences end, things will likely go back to intelligence being a trait that causes genes to be more likely to pass on, but we'll be back a few generations because of the societal blip. If you know what I mean.

It doesn't matter what causes the traits to be passed on, just the fact that the traits get passed on makes them strong.

You're missing the point. Intelligence is generally a strong evolutionary trait. In our particular society, it is acting as a weak one, but outside of our society it will remain a strong one. In most societies, it is a strong one. Since it is weak in ours, we'll experience a form of negative evolution in the large picture, because with the loss of general intelligence in our particular societies, people from those societies will be less likely to survive on the whole than people in other societies.

What I mean to say is that our society is not a closed system, so intelligence being a weak trait inside it does not make intelligence a weak trait (evolutionarily) outside of it. See what I mean?

Yeah I got that intelligence has been a strong trait, its assumed that Neanderthals and Prehistoric man were separated by intelligence thus leading to the survival of the smartest. What I am saying is what is and isn't a strong trait changes, especially if we use out intelligence to kill each other (the anti-violence message is off topic, please ignore, thank you)

Killing eachother is healthy for the evolution :)

The swiftest and strongest prevail!! :D

Remember the guy that first shot a hole in a helium tank with his shotgun, then approached it with a lighter to see when it would ignite? Now that's natural selecteion :P

Uh, the helium would've just blown out the flame. If it were hydrogen, we might have a significant problem.

Errr... true. It was hydrogen. Bottom line is that the thing blew up, and thus he secured that his rather poor gene pool was never spread.

Ok... killing ourselves helps evolution

but each other... no... look at the nuclear bomb for example
I don't care how fast you are, how strong you are, how smart you are, ect.
That Mother F@cker is an equal opportunity killer.

And to make reference to Azurain's point, lack of intelegence is passed on easier in our society. So the guy who was blown to hell by Hydrogen gas probably did have a few kids.
