Forgot about Litestep as well, it's been a while since I tried that one too.
A favorite replacement for the memory sucking explorer.exe
I'll give this one a shot. I tried the latest Aston Shell, but it crashed daily
unlike my explorer.exe which has been rather stable lately for some reason

Your blackbox setup definatly doesn't take less resources than explorer. Seems that it takes more.
Yes, lightstep uses loads less, but from my experience with it it has much less functionality than explorer so for now I'll stick with explorer (even though I hate it so).
I'll be happy when someone ports KDE and/or Gnome to Windows.

I like knowing that I can to just about any 2k/XP desktop in the world and have it running and looking and working like mine does in less than a minute. I used to be ALL about customization. Today, not so much.

Never had compatability issues, but yes, those processes are all open for a reason. I got two monitors to multitask, so it all works out
Always one to sell my personal favourite..
Litestep has had some serious improvements lately
The main one being the creation of OTS (and it's replacement OTS2) which have made the previously difficult tasks of installing and switching themes damn simple.
There have been a lot compatibilty improvements too (and I suck at blurbs)
the installer is the best way to get things setup
and heres some more about OTS

Guess mine is a strange case, because my explorer took a signifigant amount more than my blackbox setup. Either way, I prefer this style more-so than explorer. The high memory usage can probably be attributed to my plugins. I'll check out litestep later, research paper now.
Being the whiny Microsoft fanboy I am, I stick with explorer.exe. Stick in a gig of RAM and who cares how much it uses?
a gig of ram for windows? so i take it you're only using your computer to surf the 'net and check e-mail?
seriously, i can burn through a gig of ram like a pothead through a dimebag. photoshop (with 97MB image open) + 3dsmax + mozilla + virtual daemon + mirc + whatever else i happen to be working on at the moment...

oh yeah. having two... or three or four... monitors tends to make one more prone to just leaving applications open, and scooting them from desktop to desktop as they're needed
