How do you know if you don't know what it is?
Anyway, look at the context, you can probably deduce that root beer is some sort of soft drink
I vote for neither, I don't like floats of any description

It depends on the brand of root beer I have available. Some root beer brands don't make good floats in my opinion, and Pepsi floats aren't that bad.

i very much agree with calus milk shakes are better then floats exspecially stake and shake milk shakes.

Ginger ale and cream soda make for some good floats - though have to go with a classic root beer float as the best.

coke floats suck

orange floats are interesting

will try cream soda float.
