I've forgotten one of the best series ever, the Oddworld series. The games are about a Mudoken (a race of these skinny humanoids who are normally slaves) called Abe. In the first game Abe's Oddysee, Abe is a slave at a meat processing plant, and one night he discovers that this race is going to be the next product that the plant produces. And so begins Abe's escape to the wilds.
The game is an interesting mix of 2D platformer and puzzles. Each screen, you usually have to think of a way to move to the next screen. Each situation calls for different strategies. Abe has no weapons. However, he has the ability to possess the Sligs, guards of the plant.
A lot of the puzzles require timing, speed and quick reflexes. It's a bit hard to explain, so here's an example:
In this puzzle, you must pull a lever to light a torch and touch a stone to learn a song that opens the exit. Here's what the level looks like. The start has you on a higher platform, and also on a higher platform across from you is a sleeping slig, which will wake up when it hears a noise then shoot you. What you have to do is fall off the platform, which will wake the slig and will then give pursuit, run to the next screen, jump across a pit. The Slig will follow and fall down the pit. On this screen there are 3 pits with swinging rocks between the platforms. There's also a bat which will kill you instantly (did I mention that Abe has no health? Most things will kill him in one shot so as you might have guessed Abe has to run for his life a lot in the game). You have to time you jumps to avoid the rocks, the pits and the bat. When you're past this there's the rock and lever you need to use. Only problem is there's a sleeping Slog (a dog type thing that's very fast and will maul you). However, there's an armed mine. If you jump over it, you're going to wake the Slog. The mine has a pattern at which flashes red lights and ever so often a green light. You must time your use command to press it when the light is green to disarm it. Get it wrong and it explodes. So, you disarm the mine and you can sneak past it and not wake the Slog. However when you pull the lever, the Slog will wake. What you now need to do is arm the mine. Now you can touch the stone, and pull the lever. When you do that, the Slog wakes, so run and jump over the mine. The Slog runs into the armed mine and explodes
Now all you have to do is get back to the exit and you can move onto the next area.
The puzzles sound very merciless and frustrating and they are. You'll die over and over and over again until you get it right (thankfully you have unlimited lives), but for some reason, it's not that annoying.
But the biggest pull of the game for me was the atmosphere of the game. They capture the industrial feel of Rupture Farms very well, and I've yet to see another game that can top the tribal feel of the Modokan homelands. It's not just simple escape, once you're out of Rupture Farms, you must then return to put an end to the Glukkins plans to turn your race into pies.
Along the way, you'll meet other members of your race, who you must rescue (you have to save at least 50 to beat the game). This is done through the GameSpeak system. Abe can say and do a number of things, such as "hello" follow me" "wait" and of course fart (in the next game, he can possess his farts and make them explode
) In order to rescue a Mudoken you start by saying "hello" (duh.) and then follow me. He will mimic all your actions (except jump) so you have to lead him safely to a bird portal, which you can open by chanting. But along the way you have to lead him through a variety of obstacles (such as meat grinders) by having him run, sneak wait ect. If he's accidentally killed, that's the end of him (followed by an "oops." from Abe)
The next game Abe's Exoddus, is pretty much the same thing with a different setting and more actions (the fart possessing
) which is not a bad thing. It's just as enjoyable as the first.
The games are very nice length, they're addicting, enjoyable, atmospheric, funny and cheap. When each first came out, they were $30, worth every cent. They're on PSX and PC. One of the greatest series ever made.

I enjoyed Civ2, Moo, and Colonisation more.[/quote]
Meh, Colonization was too simplistic for me. All you need to beat the game is 1 city that you fortify the heck out of. Going for more points is just a matter of tedious time.

System Shock 2: best game ever - I enjoyed it more than Deus Ex because of the tighter storyline (and the fact that there was so much atmposhere!!) Seriously cool
- Buy it & patch it with the high-poly enemy modification
Arx Fatalis - just picked this one up last week - has loads of atmosphere, a cool adult storyline, innovative spell casting system. Controls take a little bit to get used to but its all good
Monkey Islands (all): Funniest adventures EVER! insult swordfighting
Deus Ex: (1&2) believe it or not I feel Invisible War was (mostly) a worthy successor to DX. Sure the levels were small, but this didn't bother me, the sheer replayability is amazing. (Chamber boy anyone?
)
Worms World Party: Crack open this with a couple of mates and blow the shit out of each other. Holy Hand Grenade
Baldur's Gate 2: Never was there a more focussed, deep enjoyable storyline (on second thought I retract that statement 'cos I heard Planescape:Torment is better) whatever, get your hands on this

Actually, I realised that I forgot to mention Max Payne 1 & 2.
Buy them. Buy them now.
Ultra-cool/stylish/film-noir/cheesy(in a good way)/gritty/stunning story
full of one-liners. short but very, very sweet.

Halo 2 is out! I like what the creators did to make the game better. You don't need to get health packs anymore. You can hold 2 weapons at the same time, too. Best part is this: You can kick them out of the pilot/driver seats.

Re: Games you all need to play.
Tales of Destiny 2 for PS1 - It's pretty much a standard RPG, with one huge exception... you actually have complete control over the characters during a battle. You can make them run to the enemy, slash, do special moves, sit back and cast spells, ect. It's almost like a 2D fighting game when battling, and you can play with 2 players (or more, if you have a multi-tap). The computer controls the other characters on your team. The music and story ain't bad either, but the gameplay is where it shines.
Star Ocean 2 for PS1 - A sci-fi RPG with a different battle system again, you can control a character kind of like Tales of Destiny 2, except the battles are in 3D. You can either choose a target and watch your character attack that person, or you can fully control the person's movements and attack whoever you're closest to at the time. Also, you can level up skills to create items, improve battle abilities, make god-like equipment, and other cool stuff. Gameplay is fantastic.
I absolutely recommend trying them if you can. Star Ocean 3 looks great too, but I've never played it, so I'll just keep my mouth shut until then.

Everybody must play Kingdom Hearts.
It's one of the only "E" rated games square has made since they moved to Sony.
FF7 started their path with "T" ratings. Remakes and the Kingdom Hearts series are all Square has for "E" rated games.
Why you need to play Kingdom Hearts:
1.Reunite with Disney characters you may have forgoten.
2.You can see Selphie, Tidus, Waka, Squal, Yufie, Aris, Cloud and Sephiroth in an "E" rated game and their some of the best FF characters EVER.
3.Your not going through the standard game story(stop the bad guy and save the world). In this game your goal is find your two best freinds and put a stop to the plans of an insane man that's bent on using minions and pawns to devoure all worlds into darkness.
4.It's got a super cool secret hidden in it.
5.It has a GBA sequal that starts at the last moment of the game's ending.
6.Best replay value EVER!
7.Great bosses.
8.Wonderful characters
9.great battle system

First of all, Master: It seems you don't like FPS's, or at least console ones. They're not for everyone. Saying that nothing is worse than a game that gets rave reviews (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/562116.asp) is kind of stupid. Plus, Timesplitters was a pretty sweet multiplayer game.
Now then.

...so we should play it because it has a lower rating?
The only thing I liked about Kingdom Hearts were the models, the animations of said models, and most of the voice acting. Everything else wasn't up to par. Little things began pissing me off after a few hours in the game and I just couldn't keep playing with that battle system.

You could just watch their movies >_>Why you need to play Kingdom Hearts:
1.Reunite with Disney characters you may have forgoten.
...again, I'd rather play their games than see a childish version of these characters and I don't see why you're shoving this "E" rating in our face. If you weren't old enough to buy a T rated game, how would you know about those characters and care so much about them?2.You can see Selphie, Tidus, Waka, Squal, Yufie, Aris, Cloud and Sephiroth in an "E" rated game and their some of the best FF characters EVER.

Oh, so this game is different because you also have to find your best friends? In this game your goal is find your two best freinds and put a stop to the plans of an insane man that's bent on using minions and pawns to devoure all worlds into darkness.
OMG SUPER COOL SECRET!? LET ME SHELL OUT THE MONEY FOR THE SECRET!!14.It's got a super cool secret hidden in it.
So in order to play the "sequel" I have to buy a portable game system?5.It has a GBA sequal that starts at the last moment of the game's ending.
Hmm...could you go more in depth about what happens the 2nd time?6.Best replay value EVER!
Zelda games have great bosses, I didn't like the bosses in Kingdom Hearts mainly because of the "great battle system"7.Great bosses.
I'll give you that, I love the disney characters.8.Wonderful characters
Please, it feels like .hack's battle system. I think any game that puts your chance of success in stupid A.I. team mates hands sucks. Which is the main reason I don't like Kingdom Hearts or .hack, and sadly may not like FFXII.9.great battle system

However, Chain of Memories for the GBA is quite good. Also, it has nice replay value. The original really doesn't. Seriously. I can't think of anything neat I got after I beat it. In CoM, however, you get a whole other storyline to play, involving Riku, who, in the first game, had a rather cool-looking Keyblade.

Godzilla: Save The Earth is an awesome party game! Four players as different mosters tromping their way through a city while beating the stuffing out of each other. Now that's entertainment!

Heh, FPS is my favorite game genre so nice assumption there man....
True, I don't like most console FPS's but there are a couple I liked (Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark 64, Doom and Quake on 64/PSX, etc, but there are lots I hated too. I despise Halo though, but that's probably mostly because of so much "great" stuff I hear about it and then when I go to play it it is a letdown. Anything that doesn't live up to the hype looses major points in my book. So yeah, hate Halo.
But yeah, I'm mostly a PC FPS player, Play all the UT's, Quakes 1 & 2, and Dooms, Tribes, and many many others. But even in PC there are FPS I hate (Halo
, Heritic, Deus Ex, Quake 3 Arena, etc).
I can love some, and I can hate some, but hating the one you may like doesn't make me not a lover of the genre.
