We're going about antispam all wrong.

Post by StruckingFuggle » Sat Jun 26, 2004 11:49 pm

I'm not sure if this is PACE, R&R, or computers. It's kind of a combination of the last two, and if you think about it, the first.

But basically ... I'm fucking pissed right now, so it's primarily a rant, and the subject of that rant? We're going about getting rid of spam emila and adware/spyware all wrong. Completely ass-backwardsly wrong.

Who likes this? Seriously?! Who wants this? Show me someone who's not stupid or ill informed who does! You'll find no one! And what's the best we can do? Prevention! Removal! We can try to keep it off our computers, and when it shows up, remove it ... but this is just reaction. Why? Why can't we - why don't we - stop it? Either through some software means, or means of applying hardware like baseball bats to heads?

This shit is a disease fucking up machines across the world - why aren't we going for some sort of cure?

Why haven't these assholes been destroyed? :x

Graaaagh!

Spam, maybe, might fall under free speech ... but what about adware?

Counter point- It's illegal to send anthrax through the mail. Do I need to draw the paralell more clearly?

Sending Anthrax through the mail shows intent to do harm. Sending spam through the mail shows intent to make money. While both would be Illegal under socialism making money isn't illegal under Captialism.

I could also point out Spam is annoying though not completely harmful while Anthrax does grievous bodily harm.

Sending spam through the mail shows intent to make money.
Or maybe just stupidity. Seriously, do people actually use spam?

.... And either way, the answer to that question is going to be depressing.

Intent: Something that is intended; an aim or purpose.
Which means doesn't mean its going to work.

This guy has problems. And their are people that use their spam.

I hate spam. It got to the point where I didn't check my thecpu.com mail account for 2 weeks and when I got back to it, there were about 6000 individual e-mails, not one was of importance. That means that 100% of 6000 e-mails over a period of two weeks were spam. So I closed the account. I had it for four years, and it was only recently hit by spambots.

But Calus: If it's capitalistic, they won't continue with that intent unless it was working, or they were stupid. Which was my point.

I know what intent means.

And slowing down networks and computers with spyware and adware at the advertisers sites isn't causing fiscal harm to the recipient?

6000 e-mails? Holy crap. I've nevr gotten more than about 100 unsolicited messages in a week with hotmai, and maybe 3 (pushing it) on my neo account, and all of those the result of the University being dirty bastards, not of spambots.

What could they hope to accomplish with 6000 what 1 could not achieve? That's not advertising, that's spite.

I usually get between 60 and 80 everyday. I'm not too surprised that I get that many, that is my email address that I list on forums. My other addresses rarely get spamed.

See, I don't put E-mail up there. If people want to contact me, I've left plenty of ways.
