My tip is to be careful if you choose the gum stuff. My uncle is now addicted to that gum even sorse than cigarettes, XD.

My suggestion would be to slowly cut back. If you smoke a pack a day, try to lower the amount by two. When your body gets used to that, lower it by two again. A friend of mine is doing that and she's down to two a day, wake up and bedtime. Fair warning however, those are the hardest two to kick.

Well... I'm the wrong person to ask.
But I plan on quitting cold turkey. I hear if you make it three days, then all the nicotine is out of your system and the rest should be easier. That's what I hear, anyway.
My sig would have contained the secret of life, but I'd already clicked submit.

Not being a smoker I can't recall a personal story, but I've heard many good things about those nicogum thingys. Might be worth a shot. Just don't lose yourself and accidentally chew them all in a day like a certain someone I know. :)

From what I've gathered from others, the patches are slow and don't work all that well.

Or you can do what I do for quiting bad habits. Put a rubberband or hairband around your wrist and anytime you think about smoking just pull on it and release. Rationally it makes no sense to you, but your subconscious remembers those little things, cigarettes = pain. And thus it associates and eventually you'll not only be able to quit, but you'll be scared to death of the little papery bastards. :D

First step: stop buying cigs.

Seriously, that makes a huge difference. When they're not right there available to you, the urge is less, since you know you can't just light up. Also, read a book if you get a craving. For whatever reason, it helps it pass. Just try not to think about it.

Try Nicotine patches, they work wonders
Not only do they replace the nicotine your body craves, they also make you feel horribly sick if you have a fag whilst you're wearing one
The only downside is that they are somewhat expensive and you need to complete the whole course, I quit them too early and now I'm back to the smokes
'Luck man, you'll need it :)

Hurm. This is where the NHS comes in handy
If you get patches prescribed to you, you pay £6.30 for a month's worth, as opposed to £80-£100 that you would pay if you buy them without a prescription
If you're proposing to do this without the aid of any NRTs then I suggest cancelling all social events in the next couple weeks unless you're damned skippy there's not going to be any smokers there
Evil bastards as we are, we seem to deliberately smoke more when there's someone attempting to climb aboard the Fag-wagon

I used to smoke about a pack and a half a day and I used the patch and was able to quit with no problems. While it seems like a lot of money up front it ends up being cheaper than a pack a day. Also, go to walmart to buy them because that is the cheapest place to get them. When you start on the patches you want to go the full 10(or 8 depending on how much you smoke) weeks because they start you on the same amount of nicotine and then lower it every couple of weeks to curb cravings and irritation.

*EDIT* You also want to have some chewing(not nicotine) gum with you so you can help with the nervous hand mouth problems that develop with smoking.

In addition to the other suggestions, which are darn good with regard to weaning yourself off the nicotine, you need to find some other activity that helps relax you. Deacon suggested a book, for some others exercise helps, or tea, a hot bath, or whatever it is that might help replace that need for some sort of "relaxing" moment. It is more than just physical, dealing with the psychological aspect is not so easy. Watching it with social situations is also a very good idea. That is one of the most common ways people "mess up" and start smoking again.

Some people suggest faking the holding of a cig for tricking the mind. I.E. Hold a pen like you'd hold a cigarette if you're standing around or feel the need to smoke.
As a non-smoker, I can only vouch for the trickery of the mind, not it actually working...

For a long time, my Uncle drank a Coke whenever he really wanted a Cigarrette. It worked.

Yeah, weight gain is a common side effect of stopping smoking because people reach for something besides a cig to put in their mouth. Water, vegies, sugar free gum, etc..are a better alternative. Also some of the other suggestions for relaxation might help.
