About todays rant

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Doesn't it have to be unlocked first? It's possible the machine might have been reset. I dunno how the arcade machines work, I've only done the PS2 version. (And there's no way I can do Afronova yet anyway.)[/quote]

No, the Extreme arcade machines have Afronova as a normal song, not an unlock. I believe to get to it, though, you have to resort the songs. It's not on the first visible song list.
Rabidmuskrat wrote:Back then people got into other games at the arcade. Now whenever I go to one DDR is all they play. They crowd around it, practically worshipping it like it's their god. Arcades just don't have the same environment anymore. The skeeball machines are abandoned. Nobody plays pinball. The arcades of old have been forgotten. Sad thing is I'm only 20.
Yes, sadly that's all the fault of the console industry. Why would kids leave their homes to go play games when they can easily sit in their living room to do so? See as how I worked at an arcade before, I see how they work. And the biggest arcade draws now are DDR, Initial D (a racing game based off an anime series), and all those stupid ticket redemption games. I wish more pinball machines were being made. Or even more original arcade games. Soon we'll be getting ARCADE ports of console games. *cry*

Lucky me, I spend most of my days around people who are 40+... I've always felt rather young... I'm a year or more younger than most of my friends, even in college I've never really been around anybody less than three years older than me...

And the other day I was at a local college registrar's office paying for a program that I'm going to be attending this fall... everybody else in line was so... young looking... I've been told that culinary management attracts people more around my age, and I hope so... I would very much hate to suddenly be the old guy in the class... I'm only 21 dagnabbit!

I miss pinball machines.

Tis a sad thing they kinda went off in the blue.

Dun worry Greg, I feel the same way at times...being 24, still in College while all my friends are not only graduating...but getting married and having kids.

And having sooooo much problems beating Super Mario 3 (in Super Mario All Stars on SNES) today when I was able to beat the damn game in a day (with only skipping worlds 4 and 7 sometimes...simply because I used to hate them with all passion)

I dunno Zenny, I recently got the Game Boy Advance re-release of Super Mario Bros. 3 and was able to breeze through it, and I'm 23. (I'm 2 months older than Greg, I guess that makes me ancient, then. :))

Of course, my brother is 16, and he got himself stuck in World 6 with only 3 lives left.

Then again, SMB3 was my favorite Mario game of all time.

I think my problem nowadays is my wanting to rush though everything. Plus im usally playing at work so its kinda an on and off thing and my rushness is to beat it before I go home or something.

Either that or they made SMB3 for all stars super hard or something.

I always got to level 3 on the final world in SMB3 and after that I could never get any further. Maybe the All Stars version IS harder :shifty:

I'm also beginning to understand quarterlife crises now - in the worst way possible. It all started when I realized I could say "You know, when I was a teenager....."

You know, moving back in with your parents would probably do wonders for your quarter life crisis.

Or if you never move out like me, parents still treat me like a kid.

Guess it's a difference in cultures for Asian families. We're more for sticking together, getting one big house for everyone and taking care of "mom n' pop" by ourselves when they get old. Less independence and privacy, and just plain looks odd in the US, but I guess it isn't all that bad when you have two full time retired geezers who can cook. :)

Uplifting twist to the whole quarter life crisis.

I went through the exact same situation.... cept for the ddr thing I always looked at the game as a.... hmmm.... I don't do ddr.

Anyway I used to be an arcade hound. Me and my four friends would go down and play on any machine we could find. We would gamble quarters or time on a machine or just for braging rights.

I stopped going for a year and when I went back I remembered the smell. I walked up to wait my turn for mortal kombat. kids look at me like you said or commented something about "Who brings their dad to these things"

Anyway I got miffed and went looking for pinball. There I saw people my age playing and remembered looking over here to where the old guys sat and waited for their kids. OH MY GOSH I BECAME ONE OF THEM.

So I ran out of there at high speed and went to an internet cafe for the hell of it. I needed my self pride back so I got some time on one of the computers (pays extra for the 24" monitor... It's nice to have money) I noticed kids were here too. Only two or three guys my age.

Anyway lucky for me there was a tourney going on so I jumped in. Started off with a little quake 2 railgun action. I blew them all away and had the least deaths. w00t take that you snot nosed little kids.

We moved up to q3 because almost all the kids were upset about playing the old guys game from the past. Little bugger.

I won the q3 tourney as well and was getting a gathering behind me watching this huge monitor and this "old guy" kicking everyones but.

After the tourney was over and I won the time I used on the computer I decided to see what new games there were. They started up ut2k3 and it was a pretty new game and went into CTF. Now if you know how to think about a FPS, it doesn't matter what the game is. I tied for first with another guy and he was older as well.

I guess my point is. Stick with what you know your good at, and it will always make you happy.

Oh and um. I also learned that $5 for an hour of ass kicking fun is so much better then standing in an arcade dropping coin after coin into a machine.

if you REALLY need the arcade expereience. You can get an empty arcade machine for about $50 and put a computer inside it. Wire up some buttons and your ready to play a little emulated arcade action.

Well that's me. Thanks for your rant it made me remember I got mine back on some little buggers.

I also registered just for the sake of responding to this rant.

I can't find an arcade near my house anymore. There is one at the mall, but I also don't like going to the mall since it is filled with mostly junior high and high school students. This used to suit me fine, but that was when I was one of them. You don't go to the mall to meet girls anymore. B-) Uh, not that I ever met girls at the mall...But you know.

And yeah, I will sometimes stop into the arcade to see what they have. What the hell is wrong with these people?! Who doesn't keep Pac-man or Galaga in an arcade? And yeah, all of the people there are young. I don't play DDR but they have this huge machine in the middle of the floor, and it is usually surrounded by kids. They don't make arcade games like they used to. What happened to games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Final Fight?

My name is Gianfranco, and I am a soon-to-be 23 year old gamer. Oh, and I still kick ass at Super Mario Bros 3. B-)

There's only one thing to do in a situation like this: Blame silicon valley and Japan. :D

Damn them and their rapid unrelenting progress!

Still can't believe it took them only three decades to change all the American children form hopscotching, jumproping, ball and jacks playing, hoop shooting kids into vegetating masses called "g4m3rz."

Greg just two words for you well three really but one is a symbol...DAVE& BUSTERS alcohol, grub, and games..and the majority of people will know what an intellivision was. It's not arcades/games that make me feel old(damn you agile youths damn you!) it's music...my younger sister moved in with me,and there is only a 3 year difference in our ages,I'm 23,she's 20...and all the music she likes sucks,it's all new and well teh suck,in my day(wheeze) music had passion, had drive, and you didn't have to have implants or bath to be famous, no instant idols mass produced via the telly...and ranting about how much music sucks now makes me feel rather old and out dated...oh and ranting about how SNL sucks now...and playing D2 on battlenet makes me feel old "Gollum:hey guys it's my birthday! I'm 17!"

well off to gum down some oatmeal.

Here's what sucks though... the nearest Dave and Busters is over two hours away, in the bay area. I LOVE Dave and Busters. Nothing better than an arcade that you get CARDED at. :) Plus you can down jack and coke while playing awesome video games. And trade in your tickets for a SHOT GLASS. That's living, there.

If we had a D&B nearby, I'd be there all the time. Believe that.
