About todays rant

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

To the person who complained about DDR being the only game the kids play: I guess you missed the period where the same was true of Street Fighter 2.

back when it was true about SF2, most of us were the ones hanging around the machines

there used to be an acrade in town here, just a small one, had a couple pool tables and about 8 game machines, i always fancied the overhead shooters than the fighting games, and i was fairly decent at pinball too, now the nerest arcade is about 20 minutes away and the only time i was in there was when i was applying for a job at the food stand there, i got a decent look at the place, had a mix of old and new games, including skeeball and foosball but i could not find a single person over the age of 18 there and i mentioned earlier that i'm 25 so yeah i would have been out of place there.

what sucks though is the next closest experience of popping coins into machines happens to be the slot machines at the racetracks and the last time i was the the age gap was probably 10 years in the other direction, so i guess in my area i'm kinda stuck in void...

I just have to say something, I'm 19 an I remember all this stuff.... heck my 15 year old sister does, I was talking to her about it (she used to hang around with me and my friends) and how she hangs out with her friends there and she really misses the stuff they used to have.
Teens now days don't understand quality, they only understand if it moves fast and I can own that slow fat kid next to me in front of that girl/guy then it's perfect.

Quitcher whining about being an Old Fart because you we're playing games longer than they've been alive.

I've been gaming since before you were alive Greg.

Yet another of the ones registering for this rant :D

*sigh* I remember some of the old games too. It's weird seeing them in arcades for $0.75 a play (Galaga, $.75? EXCUSE ME?)

You know, I work only a few blocks from the D&B World Headquarters...

As for the arcade, don't let it get you down, any of you. That kid probably plays more ddr in a week than most do in a year. As a consolation prize, we all have lives.

It can still suck getting your butt handed to you by someone much younger than you, though. Back around xmas I was playing Soul Calibre 2 in an arcade, doing ok, when someone sat down next to me. I looked over and experienced sudden horror at my forthcoming demise. It was the most feared arcade monster of them all: the 13 year old asian kid. Beat me like a red-headed step child he did. But I had fun, so really what did it matter?

I figured I should point out that there's a D&B within ten miles of my house. A Red & Jerry's (poser D&B) is less than a mile away. Which is weird since I never go to either of them. Well, unless someone else is paying...

But Greg, and most of you, can and should be happy with the fact that you can go to a Jack in the Box without having to drive out of state. :glare:

I have never been to a Battletech center. They had a FASA center at North Pier in Chicago, and I never got to go before it got taken away. I hear they put it in the D&B nearby, but someone told me it has become a glorified arcade game more than anything else.

Also, I was in Iowa on a road trip with some friends. They had this tiny arcade room at this one stop we made, and I found Ms Pac-man and Galaga Anniversery Edition! I love Pac-man and Ms Pac-man, and I was all ready to play...but it was $1.00!!! What the heck is that?

Living in Chicago, we're near a D&B, as well as a Gameworks, which is actually pretty cool. They have huge machines you sit in, but they also have a retro section, with Donkey Kong and the like. Still, either one is about 15 minutes away from me at least, and I don't go too often.

Ok, i went out on a limb today and decided to go to that arcade i mentioned, i walk in and there were a few kids there but the place wasn't packed, the games layout were as follows:

in the front were the really old machines, i'm talking skee toss (where you roll a ball up a ramp to a target) the crane machine and a bunch of little kiddie rides that you'd find scattered in malls, pop in a quarter and it shakes and bounces around for about a minute.

Im the main game area on the left you got a couple sports related machines, a golf game, bass fishing, there's also a helicopter simulator and a bubble bobble game (shoot the bubbles and match colors)

on the right is the fighting and racing games, though i would call 8 machines being strictly Daytona USA as much of a selection though the fighting games were a tad more diverse with tekken 3, XMen vs Street Fighter, a spiderman arcade game and a few others there was an overhead shooter called Strike 1942 which eventhough the name suggests a WWII theme, i wouldn't call useing planes that shoot lasers, can get powerups that gives little satalite fighters and going up against tanks that transform into hulking mechs historically accurate but i ended up spending about $3 in quarters on it:)

now along the back there were a couple shooting games where you used a light gun (like duck hunt for the NES) virtua cop was one and there was another called area 51, there was also a couple machines similar to the kiddie rides at the front but they were more interactive, had screens and the goal was basically collect as many items as you can before you get to the end of the course.
there were pinball machines in back too but there were some questionable choices, there was a generic table and a starwars table which isn't too bad, but then there was a Demolition Man table (that must have been some movie to spawn pinball machine hehe) now the questionable tables, now i'd think a Playboy and southpark pinball table would be better suited for this D&B place but they're here, now i made the mistake of popping $.50 into the southpark machine thinking it couldn't be that bad if it's in a place with kids, wrong....i'm hearing "suck my BEEP!" and "I'm Not GAY" several "ass"es and "aww c'mon, i just gave you sweet lovin 5 minutes ago!" not to mention various farts and gags, mind you i managed to get a couple free plays on the machine but still i was expecting some parent to come up and ask me to stop playing cus they didn't want their kids to hear it.

now the center of the room held the air hockey, foosball and pool tables but there were also 2 game machines to be found, one of them was another shooting game pretty interactive too, you held a gun but instead of just shooting at whatever pops up before they shot you you could also duck out of the way, the machine actually senses your movement and the viewon the screen reacts accordingly. and then there was the DDR machine, DDR Max 2 to be exact, i think it was in use a couple times while i was there but i never really watched, nor got up the courage to actually try it myself, i guess i'd have to see people closer to my age playing it before i'd even consider joining in.

thats about it, spent 40 minutes in there, and spent about $5 total, the most expensive 1 time play was $1 and that was to play 3 holes of that golf game, 18 holes would have been $5 and i think the only odd look i got was from the consession person (who i'm guessing was probably in his senior year of high school at most) when i asked him to break a $10 but again there weren't many people/kids in there at the time.

Greg, I completely agree with you wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, this kind of realization hit me when I was in (ironically) Tahoe. My family headed up there for a bit of rest and relaxation, and, hey, I was thinking to myself, "Man, I'd sure like to blaze up $20 or so in the arcades again! Man that was some fun..." so, when I had time, I headed over to Harvey's and entered.

Nothing there seemed to catch my eye anymore. I began to think to myself, "Wow, they really didn't update the games here did they?" What was another painful sight was that one of the DDR machines were down (5th Mix, my favorite ;-;), and the other looked like crap. I headed to Harrah's, expecting something better...

And I got something even worse. The arcade was a godawful sight, the DDR machine was so trashed that I didn't even want to touch it and the games, again, were outdated (no fun ones, either) or lackluster. Hell, my PS2 was a lot better than these.

I took the next bus to my hotel room and sat on the couch, pondering my aging during a game of Samurai Warriors.
If I'm posting, then that probably means I'm naked cause I just got out of the shower. ^_~

Ok im only 21 but i felt like this the last time i went to an arcade. The kids on the DDR machine made me feel ashamed.

So what I did was get a bunch of friends, and go and suck at the arcades together. You wouldn't believe how much fun it is being crap together, and laughing at how bad we are :)

feh, besides just get them to play Pool or something and kick their butts...that'll make u feel better :p

Heh...I remember PLAYING Pacman, Donkey Kong, Bezerk, Mousetrap, Ladybug, Ms. Pacman, Mr. Do, Donkey Kong Jr., Moon Patrol, Wizard Of Wor, etc (all of which you can find on MAME now) back when they were BRAND NEW! Guess that makes me a really old fart (35).
