Are MMORPGs addictive?

Post by Triviarre » Sun Jul 18, 2004 6:09 am

I just want to know what the general populace thinks on the subject.
Advice is the easiest when given, and the most difficult when taken.

Yes, and Yes.
You all know what a "Chinese Firedrill" is?

Next time you're driving with friends, try it while the car is still moving.

MUCH more fun that way. Trust me.

All games can be addicting (well, good games, at least)
But, MMORPGs require far more time than some other games, and are designed to be very consuming.

Definitely the most addicting type of game out there. Except for Candy Crisis... which is worse than the other CC, crack cocaine.

Yes, very addicting. An example from EQ: You put time, say 30 hours, into a character. Then the game becomes boring. However, if you quit, you think that 30hours was wasted. So you don't quit and spend more time. It's a vicious cycle...

For weak-willed, lazy, apathites like me anyway :D .

MMORPGs, because of their general lack of any convincing immersion or decent storyline--or even interesting, complex gameplay--are decidedly not addictive to me. Give me Alpha Centauri over DAOC any day; KotOR over SW:Galaxies; Xenosaga over FFXI.

But that's just me, and I'm obviously in the minority.

I love DAoC, but the latest expansion released totally fucked the game up.

Too addictive. And, for the most part, really not enjoyable. They're more like work than a game.
You are not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive, you're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking Khakis. You are the all singing, all dancing, crap of the World.

Some are, some are not.

DAOC i played... not addictive in the least.

UO i played for 6 years, but it wasnt really addictive... I could stop playing for weeks at a time without a second thought. I only played it for so long because it was simply fun.

Shadowbane, however, I played for a year... and that one was very addictive. Insane polotics and wars and such. It's the only MMORPG i played that players could ACTUALLY shape the political structure of the world. Very intense. But unhealthily addictive =p I had to be on it almost every day, or the world would go changing on me :D

If you ever find the time again, might I recommend this game: http://www.nexustk.com

The world's first, and thereby oldest mmorpg, ok the Korean version was first, but it's still the same game at the core.

The only game I know of where players have so much control in politics, JUSTICE (court system too), SUBCLASSES, clans (REAL ones, with special helmets, clan sword for the primogen, and a clan hall) and even spells/skills/gfx. Not to mention the monthly event whereupon new items/places are opened up and the previous month's places are closed (usually). Though if you stay around for a few years you begin to see how most of the events are rip offs of previous events of last year, but damn, KINGDOM WARS!

If you lived in one kingdom and your arch-rival lived in another, in certain normally non-pk areas, you could cloak yourself, sneak up behind him, and unleash the hurt! :D

Those were quite rare, but enjoyable to say the least. :D

Also, the GMs have access to a series of logs which record everything that happens in the game, if you exploit anything, or do anything naughty, you're caught 100% of the time, and if you get caught too many times, YOU'RE GONE.

Though when I said old, I did mean old. The games graphics, while fairly nice, are 2D and very very flat. It also only runs in 640x480 mode, or was it 800x600... I forget. But other than that, a damn nice game.

Hmm I remember the The realm...standing in line for hours waiting to get into the dungeon.

What NC said.

MMO = MASSIVE, MULTIPLAYER, ONLINE

None of which define NWN's primary functions.

While it does have a multiplayer option, it's more like StarCraft in the way games are played as opposed to UO/Everquest/etc.

There's no huge continuous evolving ongoing world once you log off, and 4-16 people is far from massive.
