Anyway, WMV files won't play AT ALL in winamp, and it seems that not even WMP can play this one right, because all I get is sound and no video.. I've tried updating WMP, to no avail...

Yes.

He gets sound, but no video in his WMV files.

I'd say try another WMV file to make sure it's not an isolated incident. If the second file works, then re-download the original file, as it may have been corrupted. If said second file doesn't work, then let us know.

You could also try re/installing Windows Media Player v9. I do believe it has some new updated codecs for the wmv file format which "MPlayer2" can't automatically download off MS's servers.

How can you reinstall v9? Reinstalling usually incorporates uninstalling before installing again, but it is a "system" program, like Internet Explorer, and can not be removed after installed.... :|

It should be removable, I've done it before. Try using "add/remove system components"

Or you could attempt to use another player- I use VLC for everything, just because Windows Media Player sucks. I like how VLC can play it's own damn format 20x better in a better player.

Have you tried reinstalling the "Codecs Installation Packages" from Microsoft? They include:
Windows Media Audio 9
Windows Media Screen 9
Windows Media Audio 9 Voice
Windows Media Video 7, 8, 9
MS MPEG 4 v3
MS MPEG v1, v3
ISO MPEG 4 v1, v1.1
