So what would you do with a bunch of crappy PCs?

So what would you do with a bunch of crappy PCs?

Post by RadicalDreamer » Wed Sep 01, 2004 1:37 am

My dad works at a coal mine as an engineer. In this coal mine there is a "maintainence" room. This is quite the misnomer, as all the old computers in there are just left to rot. People can kinda just take them as they please, no one really cares. They're around 5-10 years old, but often with numerous hard drive/memory/etc. upgrades., and all have ethernet and usb ports.

So, if you had access to all these, what would you do with them. I might be sitting on a crazyness/coolness goldmine, and I'd like some ideas.

I'd use them as destructable plot pieces for home movies.

But I'm strange.

I would take them all, disasemble them if needed, clean the parts up, and inventory what I had. I would ask friends (like I have any... I mean really) if they had any parts as well, and also use the contents of my PC workbench. I would then build as many decent machines as I could with all the parts, and sell them to people for 100 bucks a peice or so.

Then I would take the money and either upgrade my current system, buy parts for my car, or buy a keg and get Deacon so drunk he votes for John Kerry.

I'd engage in a threesome that involves Mav before that'd ever happen.

Overclock them till they catch on fire, it's much more fun than simply burning them normally.

I just had a thought (I know, I'm scared, too...): From whatever comps don't work, salvage ANYTHING YOU CAN from them. Fans, power supplies, LEDs, connectors, switches, anything that could become of use to you later. You never know when you might need an extra fan or a new connector.

take the better half, and upgrade them with parts from the worse half, and run a hosting company off them. or atleat use it for your own hosting. The Beowulf idea sounds good too, but whatcha gonna run on it?
