/me wonders what kind of fool would HUNT with a shotgun, considering it would most likely ruin the meat and therefore completely invalidate the reason for hunting in the first place.
Why? Why should something that is used for target shooting, hunting and home defence be banned?
You just described possible uses for an AK-47, among other weapons that have no business being on the streets.

I'm not really FOR a shotgun ban, but considering that I think this whole "we need guns in case the government gets upidty" thing is ludicrous. (Mainly because, as some random person said, you're not really going to stand a chance against m16s or bradleys.

Many people hut with shotguns. How else are you going to hunt game birds like ducks, geese, phesasent, etc?

What is wrong with an AK-47? It is a reliable gun. Not quite powerful enough for many types of hunting, or accurite enough for target shooting, but it would be decent for home defence. I would rather have a shotgun for home defence though. No, I don't see a problem with an AK-47 on the streets. Certainly not a semi-auto replica, which is all you can buy in the united states without special extra background checks.

Well, you COULD try to shoot it down with a regular rifle, but good luck, and I hope you have plenty of time and ammo, even if you are a crack shot.

/me is not surprised that Barca would go making illogical leaps on matters about which he obviously knows nothing.

So, let's say you're actually right, which is still debatable. What about self defense? There are certainly some areas of the country that have enough violent crime in them that it seems almost cruel to tell people "Oh well, you'll just have to hope you're not next." If everyone were *required* to carry a firearm, especially in those areas, I think you'd be amazed at how violent crime would drop. I'm trying to remember who it was where, I believe it was either Holland or one of the contries right near it, conscription was implemented for all able bodied adults, much like it is in Israel, and pretty much every house or every other house had a fully functional HK G36 in the closet just waiting for some asshole to stage a home invasion and start stealing, raping, and/or killing people. Crime rates were incredibly low, especially when it came to home invasions. Crap, I wish I remembered the exact thread that came from.

the standing army was greatly feared by the founders.

And with good reason. How much of a threat is a standing army, you ask? I pose another question: How many of the world's rulers wear military uniforms?

*AlexanderBarca wonders what kind of fool would HUNT with a shotgun, considering it would most likely ruin the meat and therefore completely invalidate the reason for hunting in the first place.

Shotguns are almost exclusively used as hunting weapons. Idiot.

Maybe if fully automatics were legal you could cover enough area to hit it.

I don't know the specifics about the whole issue with the grip and what types would be banned or not, but I think it's weird..
I'm pro guns btw, but I believe elections are about choosing the lesser evil nowadays. Not that Kerry's ban would get through, I think..

As a reference to the hunting:

In and around anywhere with a semi-dense population, it's usually illegal to hunt with anything but a shotgun. The entire Lower Peninsula of Michigan is Shotgun only, except for specially zoned shooting ranges. Even for things like White Tail hunting.

It is also important to note that hunting hasn't been neccisary for a long time, really the only reason people hunt is for fun, ruining the meat might not matter. Also times have changed its not that hard to remove buckshot from meat provided you dont mind it being ground up.
