Music you're supposed to hate.

Post by Imperator Severn » Sun Sep 12, 2004 2:13 am

For whatever reason, there are certain kinds of music that people are expected to dislike, despite their obvious popularity. Tell us about your socially irresponsible tastes.

Bagpipes: People say they're annoying but I say they're inspiring. Bagpipes (competently played) are higly motivational instruments. I want pipes at my funeral. As a poem I read once said of the Irish, "All their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad."

Banjo music/ Bluegrass: I've always liked banjos. To me banjo music is what you do when you're sitting out on a porch and relaxing with friends. Harmoicas fit in this category as well. It's just good, simple fun.

Polka: Perhaps it's just a cultural thing, but growing up in central Texas, I heard a lot of polka music. I know it's supposed to be aggravating, but I grew up with it, so it doensn't bother me. It's just such upbeat and plainly happy music. Celebration music. Glad to be alive music.

So what crap do you people listen to when no one is watching?

Out of everything listed so far, Polka is the only thing I would rather not listen to...

Actually a friend of mine, Matt, plays the bagpipes, he plays for funerals, weddings, and school functions. He's going to be teaching me when I can get the money to buy some.

Umm Well living in Eastern Kentucky I do listen to bluegrass there are some songs I like, some I don't. I use to not like it but I do now. But there is only so many times you can hear Rocky Top during hillbilly days without going insane.

I don't think i've ever heard polka, so I wouldn't know if I like it or not.

I listen to Celine Dion sometimes. I am also a singer, though. Perhaps that is why. *shrugs* I am not really ashamed by it, though. If someone is going to bash me for my musical tastes, then I don't want them around me anyway.

I adore good bagpipe and drum music as well as other celtic types of music. I am fairly decent friends with a bagpipe group that was nomiated for 4 Grammy awards a couple years ago.

I also love Irish/English drinking/sailing/wenching songs. They are just so much fun to sing along with.

Yeah, I am a geek.

I agree with some of what you said, Sev. I like bagpipes. I also like some polka and bluegrass. That, too, might be because of where we live. I also like some tejano for the same reason (even though i can't understand it).

Now country, I hate. Probably cause of where I live. I hear it TOO much.

Country is nothing but pop with a nasal twang.

My craptacular music is shmaltzy pop--especially OLD shmaltzy pop. A good chunk of my CD collection (about 1/3, I'd guesstimate) is the Carpenters. Now add my "Ultimate Manilow" CD. Now add "Chicken Soup for the Soul" albums, which are just Rhino collections by theme. FEAR ME....

I tend to listen to some orchestrated pieces when I want to relax or what-not. Could be a piano solo or a full orchestra, but I always get a wierd look when someone notices. *shrug*

As I get older, pop becomes less offensive to me
I don't mind Avril Lavigne, I love Natasha Bedingfield's new single
This is a worrying trend, I predict by my thirties I will no longer pray daily for Jon Bon Jovi's painful death
