The New PS2 Design

Post by billf » Wed Sep 22, 2004 1:13 am

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the article and pictures here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/21 ... 07997.html

It's a heck of a lot smaller than the current PS2, plus it has a built in network adaptor.

The only negative I see is that it doesn't have room for the harddrive, which you can only get by buying FFXI anyway So I guess it doesn't really matter that much.

The only thing I question about it (and it is pretty safe to assume that it hasn't changed) is if the multi-out video connection is the same as the regular PS2. I highly doubt they'd change it, but my PS2 is a bit buggy and I'd like to replace it eventually, but I really don't want to dish out $30+ for another set of HD cables.

It "looks" like I'd still be able to use my current multi-tap as well, but I can't know for certain just by looking at the pictures.

There was rumor of that at one point in time, but I don't think it will ever happen. If it does it will probably be like the PSOne and not come out until after the XBox2 comes out.

If Nvidia or whoever it is that makes the current graphics chips for teh XBox really is serious about suing Microsoft if they try to make the XB2 reverse compatible, you can be almost certain that Microsoft will come out with a new design for the original XBox.

I demand that one of these be in my house immediately.
I had that dream again. My world was black as night. Plagued by visions of a future world, I sang about these dreams, warning man of his demise. Wasted words that no one heard...

I know the truth is out there...

Looks good, not that I really care, since I (or more accurately, my brother) already has a PS2 (and I want a Gamecube, dammit!). But if I pretended I cared... would it have killed them to find room for four controller slots while they were at it?
In the end though, it's really the bees that get Sam.

Considering that all of two games, maybe, use more than two controllers on the PS2...

Though that is, of course, due to their oversight in the initial design...

"Oversight" has the wrong connotation. It's more like "What the hell were you thinking, you guys are fucking morons. Any asshole could have told you to put in 4 ports-sight."
Yeah, that describes it a bit better.

Meh, there are enough good games that are for 1-2 players that I have only used my multi-tap once since I bought it. It just sits around gathering dust now..

nah, not an oversight. The money is in the games and the extras, not in the consoles.

As for why the new design does not include 4 ports, because the original didn't.

I expect that the PS3 will HOPEFULLY have a reconfigured controller port. not that there is really anything wrong with the current controller, but the connection is far too large. Then you might see a 4 port PlayStation.

Is Sony planning to do this every time they make a new console?

What? release a ridiculously large machine and then a few years later come out with a smaller one? Most likely. See, the new version would have cost a small fortune to create 4 years ago, but now actually costs less to build than it's larger counterpart.

I would like to see the hardware issue fixed first. I'm still very lucky that my ps2 has not died on me.
As for the harddrive. I play one game that has plans for the harddrive, and that is socom II.. but other than that.. it is fine.

This new PS2 looks great, but I guess Sony doesn't realize that almost everyone who wants a PS2 already has one. I'm guessing this new one won't sell too well.

I'm not sure the point is so much to sell more machines, but to cut down on manufacturing costs like Bill mentioned earlier.
