You obviously have not conversed with Bjarni.

No, Bjarni is imminently aware of his own insignificance. He's not worthy of thinking for himself.
Nothing you do matters.

Nothing you say will be remembered long.
Isn't that a bit funny, if it applies to everyone, coming from someone who's supposed to be a Roman General? If nothing we do matters, nothing we say will be remembered for long, then why should we seek, say, glory, or any sort of triumph, instead of our own happiness? If nothing we do matters, WHY should WE help YOU run YOUR civilization? Why shouldn't we say "fuck 'em all and fuck you"?

Well?

The thing about being a human cog is its still a piece of machinery, and with a will. And with enough will and enough cogs ceasing to work, we can cause the whole machine to break down. Thus the problem with the notion of "you're just a piece of the machine" - it only works if you can keep the cogs ignorant of the power of banding together, and can keep their will weak.

If they realize their power, your whole system breaks down.

Remember that, snowflakes. :)

But seriously, I am curious about the apparent contradiction based on what else you seem to value - why we should pursue glory or pride or anything like that for self or nation or anything, if it doesn't matter (as it's certainly something, and such a part of "nothing") and no one will remember it, hm?

Because winning is fun. It really is quite simple.

Now, the other point of your post is more complicated. Why should YOU help ME run MY civilization? That I cannot say. In fact, I tend to agree with that sentiment. I'll never be a tool of someone else's designs, but I wouldn't mind having tools of my own. This is why I contradict myself.
