When I was younger and more soft spoken I always, always was called Ashley. And even Austin once. The first time anyone got it right was when I was a freshman. I was thrilled. The girl I was talking to probably thought I was nuts.

Dan, Darren, Steve, Steven, Colin (eh?), Ant (what?).

It's DAVE, or DAVID.

I won't try to put down here what they try with Gower.

Ignoring all the first name factors I always get (Yuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeee!), our family name (Loke, pronounced "look") sometimes gets confused with the pronounciation of a certain Nordic trickster god. :P

Considering that "Derek" is a name and "Derrick" is a tower that you use to drill for oil... those people forfeit their human rights. Slay them.

My last name is "Hettick." It was a German name, originally "Hettich..." But when my family came to America, it was changed to "Hettick." I get "headache" all the time. The next person to say "headache" purposely gets a kick in the back of the knees. My first name doesn't ever get mispronounced, as it's easy as hell... Mark tends to get misspelled as "Marc", but that isn't a big deal.

Our city is one filled with soccer moms and people who think slapping the colors purple, yellow, and lime green on the side of their Honda Civic is cool. Not to mention the loud, annoying mufflers, hundred pounds of useless plastic, and really large wings they include.

They could be saluting your manhood.

People mangle my name in horrible fashion all the time, particularly people who call for surveys. My first name's not all that rare (uncommon, yes, but it's a slightly alternate spelling of a more common name), and while my last name isn't common (even without the spelling change), I wonder how many of them have taken basic pronunciation classes with some of the sounds they come up with.

It is for this reason -- nearing three decades of hearing people attempting to break my ears with their poor readings of my name -- that I am meticulous about getting the pronunciation of others' names correct. I get very apologetic if I miss one slight sound difference. One of my customers' name ends in "-bee" and I had it down as "-dee." I was ashamed, and it took a while for me to be able to let it go.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

man, I felt really bad last night because I couldn't get this girl's name right. In my defense it's an uncommon name, and frat parties are rather lound, but I had to get her to spell it out before I could get it right >.<

I usually feel really bad to when I just don't get someone's name after many tries... I just expect myself to be able to get the name pretty quickly.

I'm not usually too bad, but when it's loud and I'm paying attention to breasts rather than lips it makes it a bit harder. :p

My first name's generally OK. Robin... I get the occasional mishearing as Robert, but not often. And I've yet to see anyone try the Robyn spelling with me.
Now when I introduce myself as Bob the first question most people ask is what my real name is.

The problem I have is with people overemphasizing the A in my surname.
It's Pronounced Za-Lick not Zay-Lick (and it's spelt Zalek, but that's not the issue here, if it need writing down they ALWAYS check the spelling).
