Triv, please tell me that you plan to change that immediately. That's just horrible for all kinds of reasons. Besides the danger to your pets in the form of other animals, cars, poisons, mean people, etc, you have issues of stray cats, random litters, even feral cats if you let them roam enough. People like you who let their cats roam around free should be removed of any right to own a pet until they take some pet owner education classes or something. PETA and the SPCA and the Humane Society and pretty much every other similar organization would and sometimes should get right up in your face about something like this. You are being a very irresponsible pet owner--especially if they've been declawed, and especially if they've not been sterilized.

Very much agreed.

Moreover, my yard is NOT a litterbox.

Dogs are great for playing games.

Games like soccer, golf, and javelin.

They're also great in kabob form.

Aye, as much as I like cats and all, as blaze said, my yard isn't a litterbox either, nor is the roof of my car their bed.

Sure I feel sorry for the cats, but at the same time, they really shouldn't be out there in the first place.

I agree too. I had to have my cat put to sleep because my parents decided to let it outside against my wishes and it contracted feline leukemia.

out of the 3 cats i have its basically 1 family the mother cat (JAM) who we had given to us the father cat who adopted us (smokey) the original owners left the cat when they moved and greebo the son of both these cats

about 2 weeks after opening his eyes greebo decided to try something this something was attacking his full grown mother :) hissing and bouncing sideways trying to make him self look big he attempted to intimidate jam needless to say jam with casual interest in the situation reached out and backhanded greebo since then he has always been a bit stupid and also always leaves jam alone

btw the dog next door is a full grown german shepard also leaves jam alone
chased jam into a fence not realising that cats will just climb it :)

I've had cats and dogs and loved them all dearly. I don't think you can compare them, it's like apples and oranges. My dog is my buddy, she comes along when I go riding, she loves going in the truck, but she can get annoying when all she wants to do is play while I'm doing things like work or studying... My cat, however, would just curl up with me for hours while I studied. He didn't come on walks or go outside or play.

No preference here. Love both to death.

I did it one time and I liked it
So I did it two times, got addicted
Had to do it three times, couldn't help it
And the number four time was the best

Well, I'm not a terribly active person, so as a result I much prefer cats. Dogs are just too needy for me. they crave attention and always want to do things with you. Cats only need attention every so often, but they always like attention. Besides, sleeping with a dog on your stomach just doesn't work.

Err.. people let their cats out all the time, here in Holland! I think it's good to let them out when they want to, 'cause they're hunters! They need to roam around. Although it ain't good to leave them out 24/7 though. o_O

Ary, The issue with letting cats out to roam is that they can easily contract feline leukema or feline HIV, both of which are fatal and painful. They get those from altercations or interaction with other cats, be it fighting or sexual contact. You also run the risk of your pet being killed by other animals, wounded in fights, or run over by a car. Heck, if your pet does not have up to date vaccinations then the pet can even contract rabies. You also run the risk of malicious persons causing the pet harm. The last major risk is that of unwanted litters of kittens if you don't get your pet spayed/neutered.

Another issue that has become a problem in many areas is that of cats killing wildlife, especially endangered bird species. Seems some areas have huge populations of feral cats and roaming housecats that take a large toll on many species of wildlife. There is much debate about how to resolve that issue. Some vote for a capture-spay/neuter-release program, others advocate just killing them.

It is considered far more humane to keep your cat inside or supervised in a yard, than to let it roam.

Part of being a responsible pet owner is to protect the pet from known hazzards. Letting them roam does the exact opposite.

When I let Calvin roam, I make sure he's got a collar, and has been to the vet to have his vaccination shots. That said, I haven't let him roam since his collar broke about two and a half years ago, primarily because with no collar, he's liable to be picked up by a cat-catcher or something...

All the Shanty cats are indoors cats, but none have been declawed. That's just cruel. Just make sure you have a scratching post, and your furniture should be safe.
