Comic Assistance

Post by Kytt » Fri Oct 22, 2004 5:40 am

A few months ago I started writing a story called Mercy. I think it's a pretty cool concept, and everyone I showed it to thought the same. Now, it's not done because I stopped working on it for a bit when I got writer's block. Recently I picked it back up and showed it to a friend or two, along with the new pieces that I had written. I'm an aspiring director so it was mentioned to me more than once that I should consider turning it into a movie. The problem with that is that my budget sums up to squat, and I wouldn't want to butcher my work like that. I began thinking of different mediums I could adapt it into though, just daydreams. It struck me in school, during my second period assistantship to the art teacher. She had nothing better to give me to do, so she told me to draw, and I started doodling the title character, Mercy. I realized two things- firstly, by hand I can't draw to save my life. Second was that Mercy would make a pretty decent comic book. It has action and deception and intrigue and everything that makes a good comic book good. But, referring to my primary revelation, I can't draw by hand. So I retreat to the internet, finding that none of my artsy friends can do what I ask of them, in hopes of finding someone to turn my literary brainchild into a graphic novel.

Now, I'm not talking about a thin little $2.99 comic book, but instead a real double-digits paged book, so if you're interested you should know what you're getting into. I want this thing to be good, so you could take as much time as you wanted. Also the story isn't done yet, so you wouldn't have to get on this right away if you have current obligations. The theme of it is kind of dark, the art will be like Spawn meets Cowboy Bebop, so if you can't draw dark it won't work. I live in New York City, so the closer you live to me the better- I'd rather not have the first time we meet be after the whole book is done. I know I'm being a little bit overspecific about this, considering that I'm asking for someone else's help on this project, but know that this won't be some small side-project. At the end of all of this, when everything is completed, I want to publish it. I have a few connections that I can tap, so this really could happen if it all works out, and that means you and I really will get paid.

So if you're interested and you think that you could help me pull this off PM me. I'll send you the first four chapters of the story and you can read it, then send me (mail, online, whatever) a sketching of your work based on the story. Nothing fancy, just a simple pencil sketching. If I think it works for the story we'll talk about this for real, and if not- hey, it was only one sketch. Thanks for even taking the time to read this though, it really means alot to me.

One option is you might want to seek out a doujin {fan comic} studio. Alot of them follow an anime art style though.
Practice common courtesy.

I'd start joining Online/LJ groups like mad, frankly. Just make sure you don't copy and paste the same message verbatim, but an amalgamation of personalized message and basic request.
