Thank you Greg Dean

Post by Sprite » Tue Nov 02, 2004 10:40 am

I have to honestly thank Greg Dean for making this awesome webcomic.

Yes story time (Well what good is it to thank someone if they don't know what I'm thanking them for....)

First and foremost I've been a loyal reader since October of 2003. I forgot how I got here but I'm here... I attended the San Diego Comic Con earlier before and got to meet Fred from Megatokyo. I didn't know who Greg was at the time so I paid no notice (Stupid me >_<) Once I started reading the whole archive and falling in love with the comic, I realized who was next to Piro... I was disappointed for not saying at least hi to him...

Come SD Comic Con 2004 and I finally got a chance to meet him in person... I did meet a lot of other webcomic artist that where attending the convention but Greg was the one I wanted to meet the most... When I met Greg and Liz I was extremely giddy!!! I was like a schoolgirl at some Nsync/Backstreet Boys concert... I bought a book, a badge and got a sketch... I was content... He was just the way I pictured him to be in real life, no joke... =P

I came home and decided to join the forums a week after the Con. My first post was at Getting to Know You...

Hi I'm new... OK Now where are the ding dongs....

I browsed Getting to know you and was attracted in reading this post

hello world! in c++ darnit!

I read her post and upon reading that she worked at IHOP (Big IHOP fan) and was going to attend UCSD I decided to send her a private message: "Sorry I'm a big fan of IHOP and uhmmm :p which one do you work at :D"

She replied soon after and we ended up sending private messages back and forth. I work at Albertson’s late so I usually get home pretty late. One night I decided to use AIM since I haven't been on it for a while. I logged on and some random person sends me a message: "IHOP boy?"

She decided to add me to her list and we spent the whole night chatting... We got to know each other a bit more... At some point I said: "Thank you for calling Albertson’s where we make your life easier, this is Luis, how can I help you" She replied: "Thank you for calling IHOP Del Mar This is Wendy, How can I help you?" We both laughed and kept chatting till her mom told her to go to bed... Before she logged off I told her I worked the following day and if she wanted a cheap Deli sandwich, she should drop by. She logged off and I went to sleep...

The next day around 8-ish, I'm cleaning the Deli slicers getting ready to start closing shop when a customer approaches the counter. He asks if my name is Luis. I ask if he needed any help and he quickly replied: "Oh hi "I'm" rh4ps0dydr34m". I was taken a back and shocked... He had a straight face but he ended up chuckling and I looked towards the Bakery when I saw a girl pointing and laughing her head off... It was a good joke they got me on that one even though she did give me her name. Apparently she forgot she gave me her name and she thought I was one of her friends, who is also a member here in this forum, playing a mean trick on her... Only problem is that I speak Spanish, he doesn't, and know more about anime, he doesn't (or so she says) But I did mention Harry Potter (I love the books), He seems to like Harry Potter. So she had to find out if I was real and not him pulling a prank...

Sorry for the long post but you pretty much already know where this is heading to.

Her and her friend Tony kept me company till closing time and we went our separate ways... I came home logged on and she was on AIM. We chatted till her mom, again, kicked her off... I asked her for her cell phone # which I didn't ask for when they where at the store. I called her right after she logged off... We stayed up all night talking on the phone... There's only one area of the apt where I get good signal and that's right where my comp is, nowhere near my bed (Well the spot in the living room floor where I sleep at) I passed out underneath my desk while talking to her (actually as I type this out she's asleep on the phone :) )

A week later I ask her out to dinner, but I ask her to bring her friend along with her so she doesn’t feel uncomfortable going out with some one she just met. It was a fun night. We ate at BJ’s and went to the beach at night. Sure the beach was crowded but it was interesting since we got to know each other a bit more… At BJ’s, she was making a mini Origami Swan (I think). As she was making it, she had her back towards me and I decided to bite her shoulder (Hey, she was given enough warnings about it the night before on the phone, her fault for leaving an opening… I would taunt her here but she’d probably kick me for it :P ). I took (Yes here proof I admit it) advantage of the situation and decided to get closer to her. She didn’t say anything or tried to stop me… At the beach we were holding hands, hugging each other, you know being all lovey dovey. Tony had to get home so we dropped his goofy butt off. I decided to bring her home with me and introduced her to my roomies. I walked her back to her car and we spent a good time just holding each other… (The holding hands at the beach was all her doing I swear!!!)

A couple of days or a week later (Hey I don’t remember). We ended up becoming a couple… I found the girl that I had always hope that I would meet, though I feel she got the raw end in this deal since she’s stuck with me. But we’ve been together for about 3 months now and it feels like we’ve known each other for yrs… Soo much in common, I’ve never been soo happy with someone I just recently met online and I’m not a believer in online dating nor was I looking for a relationship but someone new and interesting to talk to…

Now back to why I’m saying thanks…

Greg, if it wasn’t for you making this webcomic and online community, I would have never met Wendy, Someone that means soo much to me, the person I care deeply about and the girl that I love with all of my heart… I share this story (long as it is) because if it weren’t for Greg starting Reallifecomics.com Wendy and I would’ve ever met… My life has greatly improved ever since I started dating Wendy and for this I thank you Mr. Dean

Thank you guys for taking the time in reading this

Wendy

I LOVE YOU!!!

Leave it to this community to take a heartfelt story and just inject it with cynasism and latent jealousy. Congrats, man.

Yeah... you're gonna get your ass reamed when the other regulars see this thread. Or maybe you'll get lucky, and it'll be ignored, because no one likes "OMG GREG DEAN" threads.
I had that dream again. My world was black as night. Plagued by visions of a future world, I sang about these dreams, warning man of his demise. Wasted words that no one heard...

I know the truth is out there...

Calus a Regular sees EGS' post and leaves, because he wanted to ignore the thread in the first place.

Hmm. The logic behind thanking Greg for a string of circumstances that were almost entirely beyond his control and which lead to something he didn't deliberately cause is just a tiny bit shaky...

On the other hand, at least you didn't say "Greg is an amazing, wonderful person who deserves to be worshipped by all of us!" or some equivalent sycophancy. Gratitude, however misplaced, doesn't earn too much of my ridicule; obsequiousness and blatant fawning is what gets that.

So, ahm, congratulations? Or... something.
