Barnett pledge to repeal gay rights
here is the article.. http://www.thewest.com.au/20041207/news ... 29975.html
what are you thoughts on this?
I think it's wrong to set a different age to have sex just because you aren't Hetrosexual.
We learn to treat everyone equal unless they are gay? that's stupid. ;/

Interesting. I thought Australia was more liberal in its beliefs, much like Europe. They are definatley more liberal than the US? We should globally expand the gay debate for a bit, at least to see how the world is on the issue.
Hmmm... The article mentioned the institution of marriage as a functional component of a society. Forgetting the libertarian issues and the discrimination issues, what would happen to marriage if gay union became universal? I don't predict the flaming ruin some do, but I think it would change.
We've never really gotten into it from that perspective. Much as I'd love to, I think it might be pointless for two reasons:
a.) We probably aren't smart enough to accurately predict it.
b.) Our scenarios will probably be predetermined by our feelings on this matter.

D-Mac, Australia usually is very liberal on issues like this, but for some reason my state is just crap and wants to go back to the times where black people are considered slaves, there is no such thing as being gay or lesbian, it's rude for girls to show their ankles, necks, or wrists.. and Australia is like a remote prison.
(yes i'm exagerating.. but banning adoption by gay couples is moving backwards not forward in my opinion.)

Welcome to John Howards Australia.
And most countries have different ages for not just gay and straigt sex but also for male and female.
Age of consent.

i kinda agree with the end bit about boys under 18 and men over, i can understand why that should be illegal, but i think it should apply across the board, people over 18 should be discouraged from having sexual relationships with people under 18. it could be seen as taking advantage of their youth.
last i heard here it was age of consent was 16 for male/female, 18 for male homsexual relations none for female female. hmmm let see, its considered illegal for gay men to have orgies, ie 3 or more people, but nothing with women. or straight.

yea i agree with you there Nekra. I jsut dont think it's fair to say because you aren't the same sexuality you have different rules...
Nyoibo,
I know alot of countries have different ages for gay sex, straight sex, lesbian sex..
but Australia changed that, to have sex of any kind it was 16.
i mean, if they think that's too young, that's fair enough.. but change it for both hetrosexual and homosexual sex.. not just one.

On the other side of the tasman there's kind of the opposite thing happening...NZ's government is close to passing the Civil Union Bill, which will allow gay people to have a 'civil union' which gives them the same rights as married couples. All the christians and homophobic morons are going on about how gay marriage is wrong and unnatural and just because it isn't called marriage doesn't mean it isn't...one opposition MP is actually on hunger strike over it, hoping for divine intervention (I hope he dies). masses of hatemail is apparently flooding into parliament some of it containing castration kits (for men who think they are women) and the like; apparently they also received a tape detailing what was supposed to have happened to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah; some people believe the same will happen here if this bill is passed. People really are unbelievably stupid when they try to be...

Yes, because the churches/religions of the world have never been the cause of civilization's spread or advancement.

Religion is what unified the original settlements that grew into cities. Early political power was concentrated in the hands of the priests (we still see a fair amount of that now), and it's only in the last few centuries that we've reversed the tendency of seeing ourselves more as adherents of a particular religion and less as citizens of a state. Now we're, say, Americans first and Catholics second, and if the Pope issued a call to overthrow the American government, tens of millions of American Catholics would pretty much ignore the Vatican.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.
