Allocation of American and English Words
Allocation of American and English Words
[Thefted from the spelling and grammar thread.]
Since there's always argument, I figure we ought to do this fairly. Let's make a deal. We give you guys Aluminium and Theatre; we get to keep Color.
I can't think of any more words that the American language has butchered off the top of my head so here's the deal. First come, first serve. If the English claim it first, they get it. If Americans call it their own, it's ours.
Go!

I call "honour" for the English, if "color" is being claimedb y the Americans, 'cause damnit, it looks better with a U.

Ooh! Ooh! Can we do pronunciations as well? If so, the Americans take schedule (Sked-jool) instead of schedule (shed-yool).

Except, much as I HATE "shed-u-le", it's how it should be pronounced...

To help this thread along: Spelling Differences between British and American English
I definately want the -og instead of -ogue words.
Also:
I definately want the -og instead of -ogue words.
Also:
From the Merriam Webster dictionary. Not that I want to start an argument; just wanted to see if I was screwed up.Main Entry: sched·ule
Pronunciation: 'ske-jül especially British 'she-dyül

You can have Aluminum (because I'm from Canada and we pronounce it that way here too : ), but I'm with Gowerly on the 'ises'. Civilise, realise, empathise... You don't pronounce a 'z' at the end (try putting a 'zz' sound at the end of 'realise'), so it shouldn't be there.
I'm in an odd position here, being Canadian... we really can't decide if we should stick with what's proper (and technically we do), or if we should bastardise the language and become like our southern neighbours...
