Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

You actually HATE this? How pretentious. I don't think it's common knowledge, so I can't go so far as to say I'd HATE a person for not understanding it's origins.

Much like I don't HATE people for driving cars when they don't know how they work,
Or for using a computer and not knowing how it works,
Or for spending money and not knowing how the exchange works.
On and on.

leet is fun for some people, they don't have to know its hacker origins.

On 1337: It's not like 1337 or the word "pwn" are some special right to use. Behavior modification, set by example. If you and a group of friends have some special word/phrase, don't try and flaunt it.

On the comic: Hilarious, and well placed.

On the price of the game: Of course it's free. If there's anything video games have taught us, it's that a baseball bat can solve any problem we come across, and pick us up some money and a car while we're at it.
Society has yet to learn theres no difference between obvious sarcasm and politeness.
Nor is there any difference between a typical forum poster and a moronic doped up hippo.

Well, I hold the most contempt for people based on that fact. I also throw in a healthy dose of disgust that people can't stick with the currently bloated english language, rather than adding in more useless words/slang. On top of that, I associate many of the people in question with those who use the fairly standard internet abbreviations (anything from LOL to OMFG). Really, if you can't actually spend the extra two or three seconds it takes to spell something out, why are you wasting your "precious" time online, rather than doing what you apparently can't take those seconds from?

That opinion may make me seem like an elitist asshole, but I'd take that over someone who comes across as an complete idiot, and people who fall into the complete idiot category are roughly equivalent to the lady that sued McDonalds over the coffee being too hot, at least in my book.

P.S.
You're examples need some work. There is no reason to use the so called "elite" speak, if you don't have a valid reason to do so. If you are using a computer, or spending money, it's kinda hard not to have a valid reason for doing such.

It's hardly an either/or situation there, buddy, unless your intellect is rather limited in scope... :)

I just say that l33t speak is fun to do, as an injoke, or for random wackiness. I also have a friend that can fluently speak doublespeak, horse latin, and words in reverse for the same reason. ( He speaks at normal conversation speeds). I neither respect nor disrespect people for using l33t, just for that fact. I just don't like people who use it implicitly to annoy others, or to be an a$$hat. Like I said, use it for humor and happiness, and you're good in my book. l8r d00d, fr4g y4 t0^^4rro\/\/
arggg....i had to read it sometimes to understand what it said...

what's the origins? :shifty:
It was invented by hackers so they could keep talking about stealing software and breaking into people's computers after ISP's put up filters to ban the words they were using.

Does anyone else think it's funny when people say things like this? If you're going to toss something out like that, back it up. Don't just say, "People don't know the origins, they shouldn't do that", and then just walk away. If you want people to know the background, TELL them. Otherwise, don't complain when the uninformed use the word without said knowledge.

actually hackers are people who are really good as using computers, programming, and other technical details. They know how to push their limits and do what would be very difficult, even for experienced computer users. Crackers on the other hand, are the data-pirates, thieves, bank account robbers. Crackers use their hacker-ish skills for detrimental use. And yes "leet" speak was used to bypass search filters, and to censor words, but also as domain names were filling up you needed to have a unique title, but all the letters were used up. So, people used leet variations to keep the names, even if it wasn't perfect english. Blake Sherblom-Woodward wrote an excellent report on the topic, you can find it at http://www.swarthmore.edu/SocSci/Lingui ... odward.pdf and also a different but useful paper at http://www.goshen.edu/~sashamd/l33t/

There you go. Origins revealed! Enlightment for all!
