This page has been around for a while, but i just stumbled across it again while bored at work. AIM Acronym dictionary

A whole lot of that crap is completely made up.

Who the hell uses "B" to signify that they're back. and as far as I know "AFAIK" is a fake as well.

We all know AOL is stupid, but they really don't have to make shit like this up, do they?

If they are rare and obscure, why the hell would you be using them since no one would know what the hell you're talking about?

AFAIK is certainly no fake... I've used and have seen that used for years.

That list seems to be a amalgamation of frequently used acronyms from various disparate communities and chat technologies, definitely including IRC and MMOs.

And they're missing a WHOLE lot of them that I've seen used over the years, and many of them have more than one possible meaning. GTG, for instance, is missing, and it can either mean "got to go" (bye, then!) or "good to go" (alright, let's rock!). That particular one used to give me fits when I got used to seeing it as "got to go" in CS and moving to MMOs where it meant "good to go" (aka, "Ready!").

As far as I know, AFAIK is just some meaningless string of letters that someone threw together to confuse people. It sounds neat when you say it out loud, but doesn't really stand for anything.

I use brb, bbs, lol, but not very many more... unless I'm feeling aggro, then I use WTF and FFS.

"ppl" and "pls/plz" are my all time most hated abbreviations EVER. It pains me to read anything with pls and ppl all the way through it. Following very closely behind are "thx" "r" and "u".

I can understand abbreviating entire phrases, like "In my humble opinion"... but is "you" really that hard to type in full? Typing two whole extra letters is not going to kill you.

Ppl and plz just drive me crazy though. If you use them, I will most likely ignore you and anything that you have to say. Same goes for opening a conversation with "ctc"... it's not hard to say "Hello, how are you today - want to chat? If someone sent me a message saying "HT" instead of "Hello, how are you today?" I would probably explode.

Maybe we can eventually make language a complete impediment to understanding.

Heh, I agree with Emma's take on it. IIRC, plz and thx are the only things I use like that, and that's only whilst in-game and under fire :)
What I don't like it when people write "ghetto"
Oh, that's considered ghetto? And here I was thinking it was just retarded. What perplexes me is this: how is alternating erratically between letters supposed to be ghetto? That has nothing to do with being ghetto, and everything to do with an attention-hungry, histrionic dimwit. HATE IT SO MUCH. :x
People are like slinkies. Ultimately useless, but you just can't help but laugh when you see one tumble down the stairs.

You mean the fact that when said out loud it sounds like "A fake"? because well... to quote myself in the first post
and as far as I know "AFAIK" is a fake as well.
