Barretta. Even though I am against guns... given if I am walking in a parking lot and someone approaches me and pulls a gun on me before I get a chance to react... then I am screwed, a gun isn't going to help me.. of course, my opinion.. and I am biased. But the Barretta is an all around good gun, more for you. Or like was mentioned before.. a .357, now that will make someone crap their pants if they aren't expecting it. I haven't the foggiest idea, as I live in a country where guns are banned.

And they kinda scare me.

Wow, I'm such a wuss....

Man, I'd hate to live in a place where the only people with guns are criminals...

New Atlanta Hotel Horror Story: A guy came in and robbed a night auditor at gunpoint. Upon realizing that it was a girl all alone, he proceeded to call all his gang buddies and they gang raped her.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't catch shit if I shoot someone on this shift.

Are you going to be wearing it under a jacket, or carying it in a handbag of sorts? Once you make the decision to carry, regardless of where it is the size and weight of the gun should definately be taken into consideration in regards to comfort and accessability. Big guns with big clips that make big holes in car doors are great, until you have to wear it under your arm for a few hours.

I would suggest that if you are required to participate in any training programs to get your conceiled carry permit, you do it before making your decision. This will be the best money spent, and many of the courses you can take offer actual tactical training (like Martin mentioned) that have more practical situations than going to the range can offer you.

While I totally think that you should have a handgun, I think there are also many other things you can do do avoid potential situations, and once you have that knowledge, you will be able to get a firearm that will compliment your defense strategy.

Everyone has been focusing on the defense and such, and no one has really talked about your "shooting for fun". It is SO important that you enjoy shooting the firearm that you decide to purchase, as it will keep you at the range, practicing, cleaning, and becoming more firmiliar with your weapon. This is the best way to keep your skill in crisis higher as you would be turning your possible hobby (shooting) into second nature, as opposed to making the practice "work".

Also think of ammunition prices. Different ammo cost different, and if you are going to be shooting a lot, it can get rather expensive. My first handgun was Makarov and while it was reliable, innexpensive, and as strong as I needed it to be, the ammo was considerably more than that of a standard 9mm.

Regarding your choices. They are both very nice. I would go with the Berretta. I think Glocks are a bit overpriced. I have also actually had more Glocks jam on me than Barrettas but this is probably a fluke.

Thanks for the thread... I think I am going shooting tonight. :)

Beretta is a good company, the make quality firearms. I'm not big on handguns (shotgun boy myself,) but all my buddies are really fond of glocks. I'd still get the one more suited to your handieness though (besides, pawn shop, nick, peh.)

ermm.... if someone's going to rob me. I'm just gonna give him my money

as I agree with Martin, when shooting - you shoot to kill. that's why I'd rather not carry...

Out of curiosity, why no consideration for a revolver. Can be fired rather quickly, never going to jam on you, they come pretty small, and no one's going to be getting back up after taking two .357 hollow points to the chest.

Unless they're a zombie. :)

Being afraid is not manditory regardless of where you live. If you think you can not be robbed at gunpoint regardless of where you live you are most likely mistaken.

And if you think the odds of being robbed at gunpoint are the same regardless of where you live, you're most certainly mistaken.

A point was brought up about shooting to kill. You can probably get away with shooting to harm/scare someone. But if needed, will you be able to shoot and kill someone and live with the emotional effects afterwards? Police are taught to shoot to kill. A friend of mine had to shoot someone out of self defense, and he killed the person. He still carries a gun, but he also has a hard time dealing with the killing. If you want it for fun, then by far go have fun. For protection, depends on where you carry it. In your purse? Just about forget about it for protection, can't get in there fast enough when someone else is right on you... Catamaul is correct, take the classes first before buying one, and then seeing if you think it would be best for you. But I understand being scared, but have to look at all the aspects first.

Seconded. Revolvers are tried and true. Plus, if .357 is too powerful for your taste, just load it with .38.

True, but if you* think gang members legally purchase and register their firearms, you're sorely mistaken. And not too bright. :P

*Not you in particular, Fuggle.
