I know little about portable computers.

I know little about portable computers.

Post by dolphincheddar » Sun Mar 06, 2005 2:02 am

All right, so, here's the deal. I'm applying to go the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. You don't care. Whatever.

Anyway, they have a deal worked out with UNC-CH and IBM or something like that, which will allow their students to purchase a laptop at a discounted price and already loaded with necessary software and whatnot.

All I was told was an IBM Thinkpad T43. No handy numbers or anything. Now, if I'm accepted, I may want to buy (or get my parents to buy) a computer. What I want to know now is, is the T43 a good computer, or at least, does IBM makes good computers?

And if not, then some recommendations, maybe. I'm only going to need this computer for schoolwork, if I'm lucky enough to go to Durham. So...help me out, here, please.

Does IBM make good computers? Eh.

Do they make good laptops? Hell yes. But spendy.

2.0 or 2.13 Ghz Sonoma (still deciding speed)
2.0 - 5.7 Hours Battery Life
2.13 - 5.2 Hours Battery Life
2GB Ram 533Mhz
2 USB, No Firewire
60GB 7200 RPM Drive
2 Type I/II PCI or 1 Type III PCI

Pulled from w forum somewhere

But since it's so new, I doubt that'll be the laptop.

You sure ti wasn't a T42?

I'm pretty sure they claimed the laptop was a T43. But now that I'm questioning my memory, I have no idea what I did with the information.

If it is the newer one, I guess they just like to pamper their bright students with discounts on nice computers. Hey, they also have decent food and flat screen monitors. Why not, right?

If you're getting a decent discount, it's hard to go wrong.

I love my Thinkpad, Even have a 486 75Mhz thinkpad lying around that still runs, so that says something for quality.
