MMO... just an RPG?
I actually thought of this after reading a thread in the Rants and Raves section and was going to post it there, but decided this was a subject all it's own. Why don't developers try making MMO games that aren't necessarily traditional RPGs. The only one I've seen do this is Planetside and it turned out a little distasteful in the end. I, personally, would love a tactical RPG a-la Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics style, which would actually be really great to put on something like the PSP or the DS, but I would also like to see a racing MMO a-la NFS: Underground, a platformer MMO a-la Jak and Daxter or GTA, or an RTS based MMO. Any other ideas for good MMO variants?

Currently SE is actualy betaing a FFT like MMO in japan. Forgot the name and its not really in the FFT universe, but gameplay is very similar to FFT.
EA tried a Need For Speed Online similar to underground except it was in the 60-70s era. That fell to its doom I believe due to techical reasons.
I don't know about any platformers. Maybe those witty Koreans have a platform style MMO.

I've been playing eve online for nearly a year now, and chris (the bf) has been playing for near to two years. The only games I can think of it coming close to are things like freespace or similar ones like that. It's one that has gripped us more than WoW, SWG or FFIX (sp?) and also we both enjoy the games that were around before these came out, this was the only MMO that intrigued us after looking at the others. We have had a look at WoW, and FFIX and chris did go out and buy SWG and set up an account and even played it for about a month or so.
As for ideas, it's very hard to make something out of the oridinary for an MMO that hasn't all been done before in traditioal games.
I do like Zen's idea of a platform MMO however, that could be interesting.
Regards (and apologies for any typos)

Allegiance! Nobody has ever really heard about it, and it's entirely free to play. Unfortunately, so few people play it that it's massively multiplayer capabilities tend to lack in the massive part. It's still a damn good game, and I'll start playing it as soon as I get a chance to download it. (This thread just reminded me of it, and the last time I played it was on the family comp, which had a monitor so dark, it just about killed any games that weren't super bright.)

Hey!? I was the one that mentioned the platformer idea, you bastard! :p As for traditional MMOs, I am looking forward to D&D Online but that's only if they allow prestige classes and a good amount of them, but that is only of the traditional genre. There is plenty of room for innovation. I can't get why RPGs were the ones that went MMO, besides the sense of community people got from tabletop games.
Well, I'll say no to Allegiance cause Microsoft has a hand in it :p . Now, let's see about this Maple Story... Anyone else play this one. I want to know if I could possibly play it on a 56k
Are you being sarcastic, or are you actually going to automatically say, "Oh, it's from Microsoft? I don't want it!"
I'm not the only one who thinks that this is one of the greatest space sims ever. It has all of the best aspects of my favorite space sims, with tons of gameplay additions that make it truly great. As my link will point out, the only thing that it doesn't have is a great plot. This game is great, and a testament to the number of amazing games that for one reason or the other, just didn't sell well.

Sort of. I don't want it, and it has to do with it's developer being microsoft, but that is only because if it is made by microsoft then it probably won't play on my 56k connection. I do like Maple Story's look though. I'll try it out wednesday. That's when I have access to a connection fast enough to dl it.

I use 56k and it worked just fine. Also, the source was released by Microsoft. I believe that the current version of the software that runs the client/server was actually written by fans of the game who wanted to start their own server. Of course, as I said it's not so "massive" as one might hope. I recently checked out the number of people on. It was hovering around 30-35. How massive.

All of you quit complaining.
There is no way you're going to find a 'massive' game that is FREE. You're trying to fill two buckets of water with a glass.
A: You want something free.
B: You want something that has a large player base.
Having a large player base requires stable servers.
Stable servers require cash, and a lot of it.
All I can suggest right now is go download UO:AOS for free, and log onto a player run shard. But those dont go above 100 usually. (OMG NOT MASSIVE ENOUGH).

Nekra: Yeah, cause their previous expansions were just wonderful... :p
Arc Orion: Hmmmm... I'll have to check it out. Still haven't even tried Maple Story yet though. I need to wait till wednesday so I can bum my friend's DSL connection. :p
Brim Mar: Ummmmm... Guild Wars should be decent and what about Runescape? Isn't that one pretty descent? Not great but good enough for someone who can't afford it.

Planetside apparently lost a lot of people just after the BFR release, since apparently they completely changed the way the game played, dont know about that myself i joined after their release, and i'm more of a caver myself, i prefer it down there, the combats more fun. no BFRs, No reaver whores. Much more close knit tight squad action.
