Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy! (Full Metal Alchemist on DS!)

Post by FireAza » Sat Mar 12, 2005 12:37 pm

According to a Gamespot article Full Metal Alchemist will soon be coming to Nintendo DS! This is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time and for one reason: the ability to preform alchemy! I'm willing to bet that the bottom screen is used to draw transmutation circles, in a Black & White style where different symbols create different transmutation effects. For the finishing touch, I really hope that after you draw the circle, you then need to place your hand or fingers on it to activate it, that would be so awesome. Ooooh! And maybe the player can reach a certain level where all he needs to do is clap his hands together, using the DS' mic to pick the clapping up! There hasn't been any real details revealed on it yet, but news of a Full Metal Alchemist game makes me happy. News of a Full Metal Alchemist game on the DS makes me even happier!

*EDIT*
News about the FMA DS game. It now has a title: Full Metal Alchemist Duel Sympathy (Note the the abbreviated form of "Duel Sympathy" is DS :P). From the looks of it, you'll play though the entire anime series, judging by screenshots that show scenes from the beginning, middle and end of the series. A rather ambitious idea if you ask me. Gameplay wise, it's looking like you'll be playing mini-games in the style of Project Rub A.K.A Feel the Magic A.K.A I Would Die for You. At one stage you'll be untiing Falman during the train sequence at the beginning of the series and later on, playing as Major Armstrong and chopping wood. And yes, the player will be drawing transmutation circles, in fact you can demo one of these games on Bandai's site, where you trace a triangle using a virtual stylus, in the style of the drawing games in WarioWare. I personally hope that it won't be a bunch of mini games like in Project Rub, games like that, although fun are way too short. But by looks of things, there'll be some action/adventure elements too, some of the screenshots show Ed and Al fighting enemies from a side scroller view. Take a looksee at Duel Sympathy's website:

Now some screenies:

You can find more screenies as well as movies on Bandai's site, as linked above.

Since when did drawing symbols equate to alchemy? Or is this something that happens in the anime?

It does usually involve the drawing of transmutation circles in the anime. I never quite got how it works--it's very magical for a science.

Now I want a DS more than ever. FireAza's prediction sounds Extremely Cool. I can only hope they do something stupid with it so I don't feel like I missed too much.

Allow me to explain the principals of the transmutation circles with regards to Full Metal Alchemist and real alchemy. In FMA, one draws a certain transmutation circle depending on what effect they desire (notice that because Roy's gloves already have a transmutation circles on them, he doesn't need to draw one, however he's limited to just flame transmutations). After one draws the circle, it's activated by the user touching it. In real alchemy (as much as I know) transmutation circles were used to calculate the elements needed for the transmutation (alchemy was mathematical or something). For more information about alchemy, have a look HERE and HERE. There was a good page on transmutation circles, but I can't for the life of me find it. It seems that FMA is quite factual, that wreath thing the Edward makes during the test appears in an old transmutation circle, most of the ideas about the Philosopher's Stone is true (in fact, the idea for FMA came when it's manga-ka read about the Philosopher's Stone) and Ed and Al's father Hoinheim was named after a famous alchemist.

Ah, I think I see now. The fact that Edward's science seemed so magical never really concerned me that much and I figured I'd leave it to the learned alchemists and enjoy the show. I shall have to read up on this.

The way Edward can preform alchemy without using a transmutation circle is another story entirely, as you'll learn later into the series.

Yes, the explanation behind not needing a circle for transmutations is quite un-scientific. But extremely cool none-the-less.

On topic... DS gains a point. A few more, and I'll have to spring for one.

The transmutation circles do have a scientific purpose, but FMA made it cool :P

No, no. I meant when you can do transmutations WITHOUT the circle. The eplanation for that wasn't scientific.

Ah yes that. As I said, you learn why later into the series. It's not that scientific, (and at the same time, it sorta is) but there is a reason.

Yayyyy! Full Metal Alchemist on DS! Yayyyy!

Are Scar, Armstrong, and others going to be playable? Will combat be sort of like Kingdom Hearts or .Hack (with two NPC's fighting along side your playable character)?

as cool a that would be to draw the circles, I dont think the tech is advanced far enough for that, and for that matter, have you paid attention to some of those circles? complicated as HELL!

Blackrose: like I said before, there hasn't been any details revealed on the game yet, but I'm guessing that only the Elric brothers will be playable.

Urza: True, my guess is they might use simpler circles that haven't appeared in the show.
