03/28/2005 - GT4 DeLorean

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

ok that one was pretty ok.
i don't hate everyone equally, there are levels. but none of them are the traditionally thought of standards for predjudice. its not based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation its based on how much the person annoys me personally. i count you as a friend since you annoy me very little. brittney spears is an enemy because even though i don't know her/care about her at all she still finds a way to annoy me every time i turn on the tv

Also, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay wasn't too bad.

At least it was WAY better than the movie...

I wonder if they put a VW Beetle in... ? Hey... don't shake your head. I OWN one. them things can haul ASS. I'm only afraid to because I know mine's in such bad shape that it's not only stupid to do so for the roads, but something would likely fall off.
I don't do racing games (well not since Hard Drivin' was removed from the only videoarcade in town, and a wheel and pedals control is like $60 at WalMart) so I'm disinclined to pick GT4 up.

Oh, I adore the Delorean. Someone who attends my local community college owns one...I've parked next to or near it on occasion, and I have to pause to drool every time. I'd love to own one, but alas they're jsut a TAD out of my price range!

Of course I'd like to know why someone owning that car is at Delta College, but anyway...

Someone down on the cost of Mississippi (i believe Biloxi or Gulfport) Has one displayed outside a hotel, i believe there was a sign in the window saying it was for sale (i think like $14,000 too. Cant be too sure, but the 14 part seems kinda accurate if i remember right)

Yeah, DeLoreans are awesome. Sadly, John DeLorean died last week (March 19th) http://www.delorean.com/jdelorean.html
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?
Yeah, DeLoreans are awesome.
It's nice to see so many fans of John DeLorean's stylish vehicle, with its futuristic lines, stainless steel body and the standard catalytic converter which it was the first car to have. However, I feel that in the interests of saving Greg and his fellow enthusiasts $14,000 I should point out the real reason why the car failed:

The gullwing doors.

Lovely though they are, people quickly realised that they have one rather significant flaw: when you park your DeLorean in a car park, you won't be able to open the door if anyone is parked in the neighbouring space. So while you may be lucky enough to find two or three empty spaces together so that you can get out of your car, the odds are very good that when you return you'll be unable to get back in...

Er, not so. The doors are designed to open with a mere 12 inches of clearance. Meaning, if you have a scant foot of difference between you and the car next to you, you can open the door. Nice try, though. :)

Greg, I'm old enough to remember the DeLorean being released, and despite their much-touted 14-inch clearance the doors were named as a problem by reviewers at the time.

The issue is that unlike swing doors, which only require clearance at the lock end and can be opened sufficiently without full clearance, gullwing doors require full clearance all the way along their length to open. So, while a DeLorean's door only extends out 14 inches from the body of the car in the course of opening, without an additional 8-10 inches of clearance your door will hang up on the neighbouring car's wing mirror.

That said, you should really talk to Liz about getting hold of that $14K DeLorean if it's in anything resembling roadworthy condition. A couple of K more to refurbish it, and it'll valuate at upwards of $20K.

If restoration is not your thing, you can pick up a factory refurbished Delorean at http://www.usadmc.com/sales.asp#refurb

Granted, thats alot more than 14K, but then at least you don't have to worry about things that that don't get discovered until after you've taken delivery of the car (tweaked or rotting frame, headgasket on the way out, engine in need of rebuild, etc) Its still a big price tag though.

More than I can bother fathoming, frankly. I'd rather pay the 14k, and if it needs work, do it myself. :)

But yeah, I can see what you mean about the door clearance. Not enough to sway me, but I can indeed see what you mean. :)
