3/31/05: Pepsi Comic - iTunes

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

3/31/05: Pepsi Comic - iTunes

I really like this comic about the Pepsi.
I do this at the cafeteria at work. The first time I did it the guy looks at me and says, "What are you doing? Smelling the Pepsi?".
My friend and I had a little laugh... Yeah smelling the Pepsi. This is good stuff, circa 2005. Just like the Pepsi Billionaire commerical.

Although I will say that I only use iTunes for the free Pepsi downloads.

Those are pretty good. And I must say I played GT4 at a local Game Crazy last night, and it was indeed impressive. I couldn't find the Delorean though.

I got kicked out of a gas station store once for doing that.

I've managed to get 7 iTunes songs so far out of normal Pepsi purchases (Coke drinker in an all-Pepsi vending machine building), along with my office-mate who uses Macs but doesn't have an iPod giving me two of hers. (Oh, and my brother gave me one he got off a Mountain Dew.)

And since they're all in the vending machine, I can't look at them ahead of time.

I've so far used one, to download the Queue Dance song. I mean, What You Waiting For? by whats-her-name, Gwen Steffani.
I just get my music free from work. Fuck iTunes.
DC++ for the win! I hate the idea of iTunes. If I'm going to buy music, I want it in my hands. I can't imagine going to a concert and trying to get the band to sign my burned iTunes CD. If I like a band, I'll support them by purchasing the CD and by going to their concerts. If I don't think highly enough of the band to buy their CD, I'm sure as hell not paying for the digital version of it.

you hate the idea of itunes? You have to admit, itunes being around is really helping out the entire online music community. Even if you personally don't like it, it doesn't mean it isn't helping us all out.

Even when downloading my completely free Pepsi-won iTunes song, I couldn't help but think "WTF am I doing this for? I don't really care about the song, and I can always just get it off DC++ or grab the copy my Mom got off Limewire."

But the free songs expire at the end of April (or maybe May, I can't remember) if you don't actually download something so I figured I might as well get something.

Edit: Tried to clarify. With the Pepsi promotion, if you don't use the "free downloads" before some date, they expire and you lose them. Once you have the song downloaded, it doesn't expire - it's a regular iTunes song.

I personally loathe all the bullshit "protection" they put on the files. If I buy a CD, I can play it at home, at work, in the car, or wherever else I feel like playing it. I can make a back-up if I accidentally crush the CD by stepping on it or whatever. I can listen to the CD 2 years from now if I so desire. I can rip it to MP3 and listen to it that way so I'm not constantly switching out CDs in the player. If my hard drive crashes, I can rip them again.

That's great kirkis however in a time when most CD contain 2 or 3 good songs I'm sure as hell not paying $15 when I can get the songs I want off of iTunes for 2 to 3.

iTunes also allows to experiment with new bands and genres without having to shell out the money. for the price of one CD I can experiment with 15 new bands.

That's the Point, Star. If the band only has 2 or 3 good songs... Screw buying them. The band obviously isn't worth enough to me to buy their songs... So why pay 3 bucks for songs from a band I don't want to support? If they suck enough to just fuck around making most of the songs on a CD... I'm downloading the ones I like and skipping the rest. For free. You can also experiment with bands on DC++ and the like. I usually download a few songs from one or two that sound interesting, and then buy the CD if I think the band is worth it. That's how I discovered Dream Theater. My friend let me download a few songs from him and I liked them. Now I buy DT CDs because of the better quality and such.

Just an FYI you can remove the DRM from iTunes songs and convert them to MP3 without using analog recording. It's easy really.

I think that they really do this to keep the **AAs happy. Average Joe cannot change the file. A little googling and the average joe is now a hacker wanna be. ;)

Just an FYI a lot of music sellers are pushing to get into the music download/burn business.
Let's lump music into multimedia. There are 60 billion dollars spent in the US on multimedia (DVDs, CDs, etc). Walmart, Target and big companies like that get 80% of that business. The smaller guys - like the store you work at - don't get as much.
So what's happening in the market?
Everyone is pushing to sell downloads or sell a in store customized CD. Book sellers are doing this too. 711 wants to do it. Starbucks does. Walmart does.

I'm not trying to take your quote out of prespective, you are saying iTunes blows. I agree. I'm saying though that we will be buying our music, a portion of it, online or "customized" in stores.

Get used to it. Oh and find another job. lol - unless you work at Empire Records.

Funny thing actually. The record companies lose far more revenue from stores like us than they do from illegal downloading. You see, we sell used CDs, so it's all the legitimate legal copies of the albums, however, since it's second hand, the artists and the record companies don't see a dime.

This hurts far more than downloading, because with the case of downloaders, most of the downloaded songs are music that whoever downloaded it kinda wanted, but wouldn't have bought the CD anyway. However if they DO intend to actually get the cd, and if they can get it at a cheaper price at a second hand store like CD Warehouse, they will (unless they're on of those idiots who things new CDs have some superiority over used CDs. Remember kids, any CD you've listened to before is used). Used record store sales take away a huge chunk of those RIAA bastards money, while downloading illegally on the internet really doesn't. Unfortunatly for them, CDWH and other similar stores are nice and legal.
