Ask a Trainer
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR WEIGHT LIFTING:
I go to gym 3 time a week. I work on every part each time, legs, arms, abdo, pecto, everything. What is the best ? I do the entire body 3 times a week ? Or I work separate part ? (For example, arms monday, leg and abdo wednesday ?
When I was training to join the Marines, I had what my friends called an "insane" exercise program. It truly was and, of course, it had to be. It was a 7 day program that had me nearly killing myself, but it worked. I gained 30 pounds in 1.5 months, increased my strength significantly, and went beyond BOTH the Marine entrance requirements and those of the Navy SEALs.
Only 2 months after beginning my training, other life paths became available again and I made my recruiting officer aware of the fact that I was no longer persuing a military career. I continued training as if I were in the Marines (and still do), but 1 month later I hit a plateau (3 months after beginning).
To overcome the plateau I had to reevaluate my exercise program. I now employ a similar schedule to what you described. I work out a different part of the body every week day. I then "actively" rest on Saturdays and Sundays (meaning, I take recreational bike rides, runs, or lifting with friends and family).
--> For long term improvement and a better life-style, I recommend a balanced exercise schedule as you described. Work a different region of the body and then give it AT LEAST 48 hours of rest before you work it again.
--> For those of you who are fit and want to quickly hit a new high, you can attempt to follow my "insane" program. It is still posted on my website in the sports section. HOWEVER, you MUST not over work yourself. That program was specifically designed for military training. I will NOT be responsible for any harm it may cause since I cannot prescribe it to you without making sure it meets your needs and you can achieve the requirements.
--> IN ANY WORK OUT PROGRAM, you must stop when your body tells you to stop. I'm assuming that none of you have the tassles of a DI in your face and screaming in your ears, if you take a break. So take the breaks when you need them. That's an order.
Question: is it true that most bone breaks in the foot don't show up on an X-Ray.
I'd say that's not true
For instance, can you spot anything wrong with this one:

And to those of you talking about working out your abs, you DO realize that exercising your abs doesn't necessarily mean that you burn the fat over them, right? That's general fat you need to burn by exercise. Working the abs just means that the muscle under the fat will be more toned

Time to be surprised. I'll answer this tomorrow, but for now... I'll just tease you by saying that I know the answer because of my life not because of my training.
Here's one, most of my body is developed enough that I'm happy, even though I'm nowhere near the Governator, except my chest, which refuses to bulk up. Any excerises I can do at home that will help with that? If not, what gym excersises (and don't say bench press or incline, cause I've been doing those for years and it's not working).
Re: Ask a Trainer
I have a dilemma. In front of me, I have two delicious turkey sandwiches, composed of the following ingredients:
100% whole wheat, 7-grain bread.
Alfalfa, onion, and dill sprouts
shaved smoked turkey
Lettuce (because a sandwich has to have lettuce. Even though the sprouts pretty much replace it, AND taste better)
Mayo
My question is as follows:
Do I eat the sandwiches whole or slice them in half? If slicing, do I cut horizontally or diagonally?

If all else fails, use fire.

Hi Indy.. welcome to RLF.
Nice to see someone who shares an interest in helping other people with their health... I help people to lose/gain weight and improve their nutrition.
I'm interested in perhaps doing some tertiary study in the area.. possibly in sports nutrition - my closest girlfriend is an ex bodybuilder, now sports acrobat and artistic gymnastics coach, and is very interested in sports nutrition as well; we were thinking of studying something together. She is also a proponent of the Bowen Technique and has considered going into physiotherapy or similar, but I'm more interested in the nutrition side of things.. unfortunately life is a bit too hectic for me to go back to university at the moment.
Anyway.. welcome.

That X-Ray doesn't look anything like any X-ray of my feet I've ever had!!!
The bones are a lot bigger than mine, and there seems to be three bones missing from the pic. Though the big thumb-ish bone looks like mine, only mine's a much brighter and prettier white.
Not even going to mention the scar tissue from constantly breaking and re-breaking my toes. Gymnastics, Ballet, and Karate are BAD for your feet. Remember that people.
/me goes off to rub more pain killing ointment on her feet.
It's raining, and they're all sore again.
I'd say that's not true

I've got kinda the same problem as Kitsune
I'm hovering around 125-130 and would like to be sitting at 150.
My eating habits, I guess you would call sporadic.
Today I had waffles and eggs in the morning, a couple corn-dogs at about 1 or 2, then a couple turkey sandwiches and milk at 6-ish.., and then a grilled cheese and fries at 8 pm.
I feel like I could eat more, but I'm not sure my wallet can handle it....

EVERYONE: I'll move on to the general weight gain/loss later today. So, no more of those questions until I post those general programs. Alright, everyone?
AFTER CHILDBIRTH:
Is it true that it is harder to lose 'baby weight' after the second child? I gained more with my last child, and after 8 months, nothing is really dropping.
And/or: what is the best type of food to eat for a single mother who works full time+, and on a budget? Something quick and easy?
OK! Let's tackle these questions one at a time....
Is it true that it is harder to lose 'baby weight' after the second child?
I can give a half yes to that. Yes it is more difficult after the second child, but that's because of your age not because of the second child. The body doesn't bounce back as much in the later years.
what is the best type of food to eat for a single mother who works full time+, and on a budget? Something quick and easy?
I am not a nuitritionist and I recommend you see one for a professional opinion, but I can give some advice: Anything is "quick and easy", if you plan ahead.
So, here's some recommendations for you: Exercise well and use skin lotion for stretch marks (should have used it during and after the pregnancy, but too late now). Some of the "flab" you now see is NOT fat. Check with a doctor and keep your fat % in check, but ignore the flab.
As for food, shakes and/or smoothies are delicious and quick. I'll have to post my favorite smoothie recipe in here soon.
Why do I know these answers, Blaze? Because I'm going to be a Daddy in a few months

IN REGARDS TO SMOKING:
*Indy sighs....
First off, I wish this post weren't joined with the pregnancy one because these two subjects never ever EVER should be even NEAR each other. Anyway... this has to be said, do here it goes....
This has been brought to my attention in another thread and I feel that it is very important to discuss in this health related thread:
GUYS! I'm over in that other thread answering your health questions and you're SMOKING?!
QUIT NOW!
Not for me, not for money, not for looks, for YOURSELF! Quit cold turkey. As the other thread mentioned, stepping down doesn't work with voluntary drugs. It hardly even works with prescription drugs. You need to QUIT NOW, go through withdrawl, fight the demons, and come out of it knowing that you have kicked a habit that costs many people their lives.
Smoking will get in the way of ANY healthy living and will destroy the health of those who are around you as well. I can offer some exercise suggestions for those of you trying to get over smoking, but I can guarentee they are going to HURT (at least at first).
I really do wish ALL of you who struggle with this the best of luck. If you need any help with this, there are quitting support numbers and I'm sure that your friends and fellow members here at RealLife would be happy to offer you a smile or a laugh to get you through your day.
GOOD LUCK!
