Even Wikipedia has already been updated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Cardinal_Ratzinger

It looks like his appointment is a late birthday present (birthday was 3 days ago). The dude's 78, which probably means that his reign as King of the Catholics, (the Pope is considered infallible and God's representative on Earth) will probably be much shorter than that of John Paul II, who was appointed at the age of 57.

By the way, I know John Paul II was really named "Karol Józef Wojtyła", and now Ratzinger is known as Benedict XVI. What's up with that?

Well, according to the Wikipedia,
Papal election - Acceptance and proclamation wrote:Since 533, the new Pope has also decided on the name by which he is to be called at this time. Pope John II was the first to adopt a new papal name; he felt that his original name, Mercurius, was inappropriate, as it was also the name of a Roman god. In most cases, even if such considerations are absent, Popes tend to choose new papal names; the last Pope to reign under his baptismal name was Pope Marcellus II (1555). After the papal name is chosen, the officials are readmitted to the conclave, and the Master of Pontifical Liturgical writes a document recording the acceptance and the new name of the Pope.
So, I guess the answer is, "because."

Its similar to the naming of Kings and Queens, for example, if the UK's Prince Charles ever makes it to the top, he'll be calling himself King George VII.

Although I'm no longer practising, i was originally raised a moderate Catholic, and some of the statements and positions attributed to the new Pontiff's pre papacy years are worryingly conservative and divisive sounding.
Still, we'll see.

Heh, "conservative"? Is there really any such thing as "conservative" when it comes to the Papacy? I mean, really, isn't he infallible and simply following the teachings of Jesus? It doesn't seem like there's room for "liberal" or "conservative" when dealing with the words of God.

Though, seriously, you'd think someone just took a red-hot poker to the media's bunghole, though, with the way they're already lambasting Benedict XVI as "God's rottweiler" and using very negative, cold, stern, and often hearltess adjectives when referring to him.

Because he was well liked, the media had to choose their words carefully when John Paul II's rulings didn't benefit their own politics. Apparenlty they're trying to cut that shit off at the knees with this Pope, nipping any good will in the bud.

I think he'll start eating alter boys instead of skrewing them.

Which is cooler, and a little easier on the poor alter boy.

Why did they pick someone so old? What if he dies soon? They'll have to do this all over again :?

And also, I really like the sound of "Pope Benedict." It's got a nice ring to it!

In other words, I think that's the idea. Kind of like biologically imposed term limits, so to speak.

Oh. But what if he turns out to be the best pope ever, and everyone loves him, then all of a sudden he just up and dies? That would be too bad. I don't really know how I feel about this whole system of electing popes :?

"Pope Benedict" ... great. I'm ALWAYS going to think of him as "Pope Eggs Benedict" now.

I think Benedict Arnold took it and gave it to your enemies for their comfort and taste-bud enjoyment.
