PWNED! (19-April)

Talk about today's strip, or anything about the comic in general. You can also talk about any of the characters... but don't expect a response. They're FICTIONAL, you guys... sheesh. :)

Honestly, I had no clue where pwned came from. I figured out what it meant based on the contexts I'd seen it in but it's nice to finally see it spelled out. Informative and funny. Great strip.

Am I the only one on the web that doesn't get l33t speak?

Actually I have to reconsider my earlier post.

Although I figured that PWND! was something akin to OWNED! I always thought of it as a vowel-less PAWNED! as in:

We came into this competition on equal footing but now that I have clearly demonstrated my superiority it is a fair statement to say that I am your king and you are my pawn. I have effectively PAWNED you.

What does anyone else think?

Also: civil smack-talk turns me on :)

Wow, now we know where PWNED comes from. I feel soo enlightened. Who knew that back in the 80s where they used their 486s to play cops and robbers where the word would come from!

May I use this without fearing some legal action taken against me? Cause I like this one a lot.

I have a shirt that says "I 0wn3d j00".

And yes, I verbalize "Pwned" every now and then, and I'm not ashamed of it.

"Poned" like "Phoned" with a hard P instead of an F sound. I usually just say "owned" though...the P is implied.

What I've reasoned and been told that pwned comes from something like "power owned" or maybe just a degredation of own or the typo justified with power owned. So I would pronounce it with the p sound of power followed by own.

i found the meaning in urbandictionary.com Pwned is actually a typo, the "creator" was making a Warcraft campaign and when typing out the defeat message instead of "<player> has been owned!" he accidently put "<player> has be pwned" and so anyone who played that campaign saw the typo and it stuck

Who can remember the first time they ever saw someone type pwned?

The first time I ever encountered it was in UO during a guild pvp tourney ... my roommate pwned our guildmaster.
