Do you say mortar & pestle or pestle and mortar?

Post by Smaointe » Sat Apr 30, 2005 5:44 am

Pretty self-explanatory.

I have a particular way that I prefer, but lately I have been hearing the other version and it bugs me. I won't say which is which though. Yes, I'm very anal... I'm just curious to see what most people say.

What are you talking about? Mortar and pestle is the way to go. My tongue just gets confused cause my brain is saying "Mortar and pestle", but my tongue is trying to say "Pestle and mortar"

I've never heard it as "pestle and mortar" before. Always "mortar and pestle".

It would be more appropriate for me to vote if I ever actually said that...either way.

I've always heard, read, and said mortar and pestle... I've never heard/seen it any other way.

It seems to be a UK thing. I've heard quite a few TV chefs say "pestle and mortar" lately, and it just sounds odd :P

I dont think I've ever mentioned the object myself, but I've always heard/seen it as mortar and pestle.

I usually say "mortar and pestle" but now that I've read "pestle and mortar" I keep hearing "portar and mestle" and "mestle and portar" in my head and I am SO CONFUSED.

M before P. Always. Usually (though not CONSISTENTLY) terms sound better when listed alphabetically.

Yeah well Em, I agree... it sounds weird. I knew you'd make a poll of this one day you are always commenting about it.
