Now, I may be in the minority when I say it, but it is my opinion that a woman should not breast feed in public at all. Just because it is natural is not an excuse. It is natural to pee or poop but I do neither in public, and even if I decided to use a towel to cover myself it would still be inappropiate to do it in public. The fact is breast milk is not in fact better then formula if you look at the facts and the weening process from the breast is a lot more difficult then from the bottle. Breast feeding is a neanderthalistic practice and should have stopped by now and people that still do it are either really just subconsciously looking for attention or are afraid of change and ignorant of technology.

So what Aiyana? If rolls were reveresed and men fed babies from their penis' then we could say that women have no right to participate in this discussion because they don't have a penis?

Yes, I realize it's a silly thing to say, but it's just as silly as Aiy saying that men have no say in this poll. The horny teenager in me says "YAY! BOOBS!", but the chivilrous adult in me says "Cover thy self good lady!"... :shifty:

So yeah, seriously, I think that people should stop being so anal and bitchy about things that are perfectly natural. We shouldn't be shunning something because it's "gross"--if we shunned EVERYTHING that was gross about 80% of the women I know would never have children because they've said they think the penis is gross and strange looking.

Though, I think it's only right to expect the mother to at least have some decency and try to do it in a private place. Like, if you're in a resturant or someplace else with easy and fast access to a bathroom, then they should at least make an attempt to reach privacy.

I agree with you, but bathrooms aren't the best places to feed babies, they are often less than hygienic, and they rarely have places to sit. Some shopping centres here have "parenting rooms" with change tables, booths with curtains for mums to sit and feed etc. I think if I had the choice between a shopping centre bathroom and sitting in public with a blanket, I'd choose public, because I don't like the idea of feeding my baby in a public toilet. I guess it depends on what facilities are available.

Wow, that is without a doubt THE most ignorant thing I have ever heard on this forum. I'm embarrassed for you.

To follow your line of thinking: Sex is a "neanderthalistic" practice and should have stopped by now. It perpetuates the problem of STDs, teen pregnancy, and all manner of other problems. If people want to reproduce, they should use IVF and IVF only. People that still have sex are afraid of change and ignorant of technology.

Agreed, Nukin. :D

And Elroy, as the NON-US residents seem to be saying the same thing (most notably Emma and Aiyana), I don't see how you could generalize it by saying it's "American Puritan Attitude." Then again, maybe it's just me.

First, I would like to say that I do believe there should also be more parenting rooms in more places because I do realize that it kind of works against the mother a lot of the times and in that case, if a woman insists on breastfeeding and can not find a place when the baby is hungry then public feeding is totally acceptable.

Also, Smaointe, here's the thing. Sex, if done responsibly and intelligently is not dangerous and the same follows for breastfeeding but the fact is formula is really a healthy alternative and that fact is not known by enough people because idiot naturalistic twits keep on purporting the idea that breast milk is better, when it is in fact not. That and if you don't properly ween a baby of a breast it creates a plethora of societal and medical problems but this issue is all about responsibility.

As long as the woman is kind enough to cover herself slightly, I see no problem about it. Actually, in some nicer malls and establishments, there are really nice lounge rooms where a woman can breast feed if they don't wish to in public.

You know, nice carpets, plush couches, flowers, the whole shibang.

This is for Smaonite, because she is so right this time, and because I've spelled her name wrong too many other times to count and I need to make up for it. :?

http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/895_brstfeed.html

It's a reputable source that states breast feeding is BEST for babies.
More than two decades of research have established that breast milk is perfectly suited to nourish infants and protect them from illness. Breast-fed infants have lower rates of hospital admissions, ear infections, diarrhea, rashes, allergies, and other medical problems than bottle-fed babies.
The primary benefit of breast milk is nutritional. Human milk contains just the right amount of fatty acids, lactose, water, and amino acids for human digestion, brain development, and growth.
Human milk contains at least 100 ingredients not found in formula. No babies are allergic to their mother's milk, although they may have a reaction to something the mother eats. If she eliminates it from her diet, the problem resolves itself.
End of argument.

And yes, there are exceptions where it is better for a baby to not be breast fed, but those are in the slim minority, and are usually caused by a medical condition. Usually an illness, or a medication that the mother is required to take.

Thanks gravity, but I'm waiting with bated breath for jimkatai to come up with some sort of research to support his ridiculous and completely laughable claims.

Can't wait.
