I went legit

Post by mikehendo » Fri May 06, 2005 11:37 pm

I just did it today.. went out and bought Windows XP.. I feel like such a sell out now. A sell out and an upstanding citizen.. There was a certain joy in running a pirated version of Windows, but having to find a new key everytime mine was invalidated got a bit old..

As far as the placement for this thread, I was torn between here, r&r, and gen chat.. If anyone has a problem with this being here, as opposed to the other places, just drop me a PM..

You should have checked to see if your employers agreement with microsoft allowed employees to use their copy+key for XP.

Mine does, but they don't tell everybody that because then we'd be inundated by requests from employees for us to set it up for them. :)

If it turns out they do, try to get a refund for your copy.

You could have just downloaded and installed a copy of Linux and used that for free legitimattly insted of shelling out $100+ for XP.

But thats just me....

Heh, there is a deal that is available for colleges (they dont do it tho) where they pay a little bit more (i'm not sure how much more) and instead of JUST all the employees get a copy, all the employees and all the students get a copy, legit. :-/

My school sort of does that. They let you install the software on your computer but you have to return the disk.

mikehendo, you could probably have gone into your campus bookstore and paid $8 for a brand-spankin-new-and-fully-legal-and-legit copy of XP Pro.

Nothing like that here, Deacon.. the 90 that I got it for is the cheapest that I could have gotten it on campus. I guess I probably should have mentioned the whole buying it on campus thing earlier.

If it ever came down to the point where it was either buy a copy of windows, or don't use it, I'd just go all Linux. If I could get a copy of windows for $10, I'd probably buy it and go legit. But IMO, it's not worth $100+

And Mike....How do you sleep at night? :p

get various licences floating around from shop-bought computers, and laptops and the such, and the "1 home copy and 1 portable copy" rule is a nice one :)

Which doesn't apply to XP. I've read through the EULA many times, out of sheer boredom, and it's not in there.

It IS in there for Office, but not Windows.
