Won't win. I tend to document everything in those situations. In my class notes for the day I'll include "Jimmy slept through lecture" or something like that.
Heh, thats an interesting approach. You really have 2 ways of seeing the situation. One is that its your job to take care of these kids, make sure they get an education, encourage them etc. And the other is that for the kids to get an education they really need to make an effort, and be interested.

I think the best path is somewhere in the middle. Try to get the kids attention and interest, but in the end most of the kids wont bother, since they're not interested. Not much you can do then.

Oh, and I if the school policy isn't completely against it, I allow pop/coffee/nodoz in the room if the kids need it. I'd rather have those that care but had a rough night/long day/whatever paying attention by any means they deem appropriate (within reason).

i find i work better when i am chewing, so during all of my uni work i had bubblegum or something to nibble on. The best path isn't down the middle, the teachers only responsibility is to offer the kids a education. If the kids turn down at offer its their own dumb ass fault. granted there needs to be some leeway and the teacher does need to try and make an effort to make it interesting for the kids. But i dont see why a teacher should be forced to try and teach a student with no interest in learning. I always thought that the right to an education should not be forced on people. and if they dont want to take advantage of it they shouldn't have to.

forget who's suing what...
it's a teachers responsibility to teach. if the teacher's good +100% of the class will be listening and learning.

Nah, sorry but no matter how good the teacher is, some people wont pay attention. Like me ;). The school system is too broad, so there are certain classes that people wont care about. And the only ones that do are the ones trying to get into the Ivy League schools, or similar.

My entire life (including my user name) is based on a philosophy of Balance. Too much control can be just as devastating as too much chaos. The school (in my opinion and in this case) tried to keep this kid in their control way to much. Just imagine how many people have been outraged at this school if the kids mother had been shot the next day?
