How Real ID will affect you

Perspectives on our world and our universe, how it works, what is happening, and why it happens. Whether by a hidden hand or natural laws, we come together to hash it out, and perhaps provide a little bit of education and enlightenment for others. This is a place for civil discussion. Please keep it that way.
Forum rules
1) Remain civil. Respect others' rights to their viewpoints, even if you believe them to be completely wrong.
2) Sourcing your information is highly recommended. Plagiarism will get you banned.
3) Please create a new thread for a new topic, even if you think it might not get a lot of responses. Do not create mega-threads.
4) If you think the subject of a thread is not important enough to merit a post, simply avoid posting in it. If enough people agree, it will fall off the page soon enough.

Because I occasionally manage to piss off a few dozen Slashdotters, and I don't need them rampaging around here.

And most (all?) states already have unique numbers. Add a state abbreviation to the beginning of them, and you're guaranteed to have unique numebrs across the board.

Texas driver's license numbers are totally unrelated to SSNs.

I'm opposed to the real ID because I am opposed to all expasnsion of federal government power.

When they dictate standards to the states how the states are to conduct their business they intrude on the rights of the states which intrudes on the rights the people.

Bad idea.

What happens when the states want to do something that encourages an action that the federal government (ideally) should want to impede, in this case illegal immigration?

Many states have such laws about bills. I know that California doesn't allow initiatives to cover more than one subject.

And yet the United States Congress, which is what we're talking about, here, has no such rules.
